Although there have been numerous studies aimed at determining the effects and safety of early vs. late surgical decompression for traumatic cervical spinal cord injury, controversies still exist regarding the optimal timing of surgery for this serious spinal trauma. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of early vs. late surgical decompression for lower cervical spine trauma associated with spinal cord injury. ⋯ The timing of surgery for patients sustaining traumatic lower cervical spine injury with neurological involvement did not affect neurological recovery. Early surgical intervention was associated with a higher incidence of mortality and neurological deterioration compared with late surgical intervention, indicating that surgery after the first 72 hours might be relatively safe.

The aim of this study was to determine the exacerbating factors of chronic low back pain (LBP) and strategic points against LBP in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). ⋯ This study demonstrated that exacerbating factors of LBP include stage of motor function, motor complications of PD and stooped posture with decreased lumbar lordosis and range of lumbar movement. Therefore, control of PD, including motor complications, active treatment for osteoporosis and therapeutic exercise, are important for treating chronic LBP in patients with PD.

Falls from trees related traumas are rarely reported in literature. They are public health problems in developing countries where their frequency is still important. The aim of the study is to describe falls from trees related trauma patterns and to present preventative measures. ⋯ Education programs must focus on picking fruits and leaves in order to make them safe and prevent injuries related to these traditional or professional activities.

Severly increased femoral anteversion is an important risk factor for patellofemoral instability. Recurrent dislocations cause a traumatic disruption of the medial patellofemoral ligament. Therefore a procedure that combines femoral derotation osteotomy and patellofemoral ligament reconstruction should be considered for patients with severely increased femoral anteversion. The aim of the study was to evaluate the subjective and objective outcomes after combined femoral derotation osteotomy and anatomical reconstruction of the MPFL. ⋯ Combined anatomical reconstruction of the MPFL and femoral derotation osteotomy resulted in significant improvement of knee function and good patient satisfaction in young patients with severely increased femoral anteversion. No re-dislocation of the patella occured.

Nursing is a profession with high incidence and prevalence of low back pain (LBP), with its medical and professional consequences. These prevalence rates vary among countries, and with various measurements have been used to determine LBP. Individual and work-related factors are regarded as causal factors for many back injuries. The aims of study this were: (1) to estimate the prevalence of LBP using different measures, (2) to determine medical and professional consequences of LBP, and (3) to determine the associated factors and significant predictors of LBP. ⋯ The prevalence of LBP among nurses at HGH is high and should be actively addressed, however, it was not a major cause of sick leave. Preventive measures should be taken to reduce the risk of lower back pain, such as arranging proper rest periods, educational programs to teach the proper use of body mechanics and sports activity programs.
