As the latest identified novel Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variant of concern (VOC), the influence of Omicron on our globe grows promptly. Compared with the last VOC (Delta variant), more mutations were identified, which may address the characteristics of Omicron. Considering these crucial mutations and its implications including increase in transmissibility, COVID-19 severity and reduction of efficacy of currently available diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics, Omicron has been classified as one of the VOC. ⋯ Hence, we need to proceed with a sense of urgency in this matter. Despite the worldwide vaccination, the COVID-19 pandemic continues as SARS-CoV-2 evolves into numerous variants. Since the first identification of the novel SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern (VOC) Omicron on November 24th, 2021, from an immunocompromised patient in South Africa, the variant has overtaken Delta as the predominant lineage in South Africa and has quickly spread to over 40 countries. ⋯ In addition, we have also identified mutations that may affect the ACE2 receptor and/or antibody bindings. Our study has raised additional questions on the evolution, transmission, virulence, and immune escape properties of this new Omicron variant.

Following the discovery of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant (B.1.1.529), the global COVID-19 outbreak has resurfaced after appearing to be relentlessly spreading over the past 2 years. This new variant showed marked degree of mutation, compared with the previous SARS-CoV-2 variants. This study investigates the evolutionary links between Omicron variant and recently emerged SARS-CoV-2 variants. ⋯ A genome alignment with other variants indicated the greatest number of gaps in the Omicron variant's genome ranging from 43 to 63 gaps. It is possible, given their close relationship to the Alpha variety, that Omicron has been around for much longer than predicted, even though they created a separate monophyletic group. Sequencing initiatives in a systematic and comprehensive manner is highly recommended to study the evolution and mutations of the virus.

A high-throughput, fully automated antigen detection test for SARS-CoV-2 is a viable alternative to reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) for mass screening during outbreaks. In this study, we compared RT-qPCR for viral load and the VITROS® SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Test with reference to the results of the LUMIPULSE® SARS-CoV-2 Ag Test. Of 128 nasopharyngeal swab specimens taken from patients suspected of being infected with SARS-CoV-2, 49 were positive and 79 were negative according to RT-qPCR. ⋯ Our results show that the performance of the VITROS® assay was satisfactory for the diagnosis of contagious COVID-19 patients in the clinical setting. Highlights The performance of the VITROS® SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Test was sufficient for the diagnosis of contagious COVID-19. This test showed high sensitivity and specificity in the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in samples with a Ct value of 32 or less.

The present study was conducted from July 1, 2020 to September 25, 2020 in a dedicated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospital in Delhi, India to provide evidence for the presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus in atmospheric air and surfaces of the hospital wards. Swabs from hospital surfaces (patient's bed, ward floor, and nursing stations area) and suspended particulate matter in ambient air were collected by a portable air sampler from the medicine ward, intensive care unit, and emergency ward admitting COVID-19 patients. ⋯ The presence of the virus in the air beyond a 1-m distance from the patients and surfaces of the hospital indicates that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has the potential to be transmitted by airborne and surface routes from COVID-19 patients to health-care workers working in COVID-19 dedicated hospital. This warrants that precautions against airborne and surface transmission of COVID-19 in the community should be taken when markets, industries, educational institutions, and so on, reopen for normal activities.
