Comparative StudyMRI-detected suspicious breast lesions: predictive values of kinetic features measured by computer-aided evaluation.
Computer-aided evaluation (CAE) programs for breast MRI provide automated lesion kinetic information. The CAE kinetic parameters that best predict malignancy have not been established. We compared three CAE kinetic features of suspicious breast MRI lesions to determine associations with benign or malignant outcomes. ⋯ Of CAE kinetics analyzed, only delayed enhancement categorized by most suspicious type was significantly different between benign and malignant lesions. This supports the American College of Radiology BI-RADS Breast MRI Lexicon recommendation to report the "worst looking" kinetic curve.

Comparative StudyPreoperative staging of papillary thyroid carcinoma: comparison of ultrasound imaging and CT.
The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound imaging with that of CT in the preoperative evaluation of primary tumors and cervical lymph nodes in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma and to determine whether CT has greater diagnostic value than ultrasound alone in the care of these patients. ⋯ High-resolution ultrasound can be accurate in preoperative evaluation for extrathyroidal tumor extension and lateral lymph node metastasis. CT had greater sensitivity than ultrasound alone in the detection of central lymph node metastasis for all lesions. For papillary thyroid microcarcinoma, however, there was no significant difference in the diagnostic accuracy rates of ultrasound, CT, and the combination of ultrasound and CT.

D-dimers and efficacy of clinical risk estimation algorithms: sensitivity in evaluation of acute pulmonary embolism.
The goal of this study was to test the efficacy of clinical risk algorithms and a quantitative immunoturbidimetric D-dimer assay in the evaluation of patients undergoing pulmonary CT angiography for suspected acute pulmonary embolism. ⋯ The data appear to support the use of a quantitative D-dimer assay as a first-line test in evaluation for pulmonary embolism when the clinical probability of the presence of pulmonary embolism is low or intermediate. The sensitivity and negative predictive value were 100% for these cases. More than 26% of CT angiographic examinations might have been avoided if the D-dimer assay had been used as a first-line test in the care of patients at low or intermediate risk. Because of the small sample size, the D-dimer assay is not recommended as a first-line test in the evaluation of patients at high risk.

Comparative StudyDiffusion-weighted MRI of peritoneal tumors: comparison with conventional MRI and surgical and histopathologic findings--a feasibility study.
The purpose of our study was to evaluate the utility of single-shot spin-echo echo-planar diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) using a b value of 400-500 s/mm(2) for depicting peritoneal tumors. ⋯ Adding DWI to routine MRI improves the sensitivity and specificity for depicting peritoneal metastases. Breath-hold DWI is now routinely used in all oncology patients referred for abdominal MRI at our institution.
