Operator-dependent techniques for graded compression sonography to detect the appendix and diagnose acute appendicitis.
The objective of our prospective study was to evaluate the value of various operator-dependent techniques that allow graded compression sonography to detect normal or abnormal vermiform appendix. ⋯ The addition of various operator-dependent techniques to graded compression sonography is useful for allowing improved visualization of both normal and abnormal appendixes.

Peer review at the American Journal of Roentgenology: how reviewer and manuscript characteristics affected editorial decisions on 196 major papers.
The objective of this study was to examine the relative influence of manuscript characteristics and peer-reviewer attributes in the assessment of manuscripts. ⋯ At the AJR, manuscript acceptance was most strongly associated with reviewer scoring of the science and import of a major paper and also with the country of origin. Reviewers who were older and of higher academic rank tended to discount the importance of manuscripts.

Comparative StudyMR arthrography of the hip: diagnostic performance of a dedicated water-excitation 3D double-echo steady-state sequence to detect cartilage lesions.
The objective of our study was to compare the diagnostic performance of a dedicated cartilage MR sequence (water-excitation 3D double-echo steady-state) with a standard MR sequence (T1-weighted spin-echo) in detecting articular cartilage lesions of the hip after intraarticular injection of gadopentetate dimeglumine. ⋯ The 3D double-echo steady-state sequence optimized for cartilage imaging improves lesion conspicuity but does not improve diagnostic performance.

Validation of dental panoramic radiography measures for identifying postmenopausal women with spinal osteoporosis.
Measurements of mandibular inferior cortical shape and width detected on dental panoramic radiographs may be a useful screening tool for spinal osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. The purposes of this study were to clarify whether these measures are validated compared with simple screening tools based on questionnaires, such as the osteoporosis self-assessment tool (OST) and whether these measures can be used in postmenopausal women with histories of hysterectomy, oophorectomy, or estrogen use. ⋯ Dentists may be able to refer postmenopausal women with suspected spinal osteoporosis for bone densitometry on the basis of dental panoramic radiographs with diagnostic performance similar to that of osteoporosis screening tools based on questionnaires.

MRI guidance of focused ultrasound therapy of uterine fibroids: early results.
The purpose of this study was to explore our hypothesis that MRI-guided focused ultrasound therapy for the treatment of uterine fibroids will lead to a significant reduction in symptoms and improvement in quality of life. We describe focused ultrasound therapy applications and the method for monitoring the thermal energy deposited in the fibroids, including the MRI parameters required, in a prospective review of 108 treatments. ⋯ This early description of MRI-guided focused ultrasound therapy treatment of fibroids includes follow-up data and shows that, although the volume reduction is moderate, it correlates with treatment volume and the symptomatic response to this treatment is encouraging.
