Detection of malignant hepatic lesions before orthotopic liver transplantation: accuracy of ferumoxides-enhanced MR imaging.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ferumoxides-enhanced MR imaging for screening malignant hepatic lesions before orthotopic liver transplantation. ⋯ Ferumoxides-enhanced gradient-echo sequences improved the diagnostic accuracy and the sensitivity for detecting malignant hepatic lesions in patients with end-stage cirrhosis of the liver. However, the specificity was not improved even after the administration of ferumoxides because of the false-positive lesions that were mainly the result of fibrotic changes.

Comparative StudyPredicting the presence of acute pulmonary embolism: a comparative analysis of the artificial neural network, logistic regression, and threshold models.
The objective of this study was to determine whether an artificial neural network, a new data analysis method, offers increased performance over conventional logistic regression in predicting the presence of a pulmonary embolism for patients in a well-known data set. ⋯ In the study population, the usefulness of data from ventilation-perfusion scans as predictors of the presence of a pulmonary embolism was similar for the three analytic methods, a finding that reinforces the importance of making comparisons to simpler or more established methods when performing studies involving complex analytic models, such as artificial neural networks.

Using relative cerebral blood flow and volume to evaluate the histopathologic grade of cerebral gliomas: preliminary results.
Relative cerebral blood flow has rarely been studied as part of the preoperative assessment of tumor grade, although relative cerebral blood volume is known to be useful for this assessment. The purpose of our study was to determine the usefulness of relative cerebral blood flow in assessing the histopathologic grade of cerebral gliomas. ⋯ First-pass gadopentetate dimeglumine-enhanced T2-weighted echoplanar perfusion MR imaging is useful for the preoperative assessment of tumor grade. A relative cerebral blood flow ratio, in addition to a relative cerebral blood volume ratio, can be a useful tool in the evaluation of the histopathologic grade of cerebral gliomas.

Multidetector CT: detection of active hemorrhage in patients with blunt abdominal trauma.
The aim of this study was to determine the imaging findings and the prevalence of active hemorrhage on contrast-enhanced multidetector CT in patients with blunt abdominal trauma. ⋯ Active hemorrhage in patients after blunt abdominal trauma is most frequently visible as a jet of extravasated contrast agent on multidetector CT. When extravasation is detected, immediate surgical or angiographic therapy is required.
