MR imaging and T2 mapping of femoral cartilage: in vivo determination of the magic angle effect.
The purpose of this study was to perform a quantitative evaluation of the effect of static magnetic field orientation on cartilage transverse (T2) relaxation time in the intact living joint and to determine the magnitude of the magic angle effect on in vivo femoral cartilage. ⋯ The effect of orientation on cartilage T2 is substantially less than that predicted from prior ex vivo studies. The greatest variation in cartilage T2 is observed in the superficial 20% of cartilage. Given the small orientation effect, it is unlikely that the "magic angle effect" accounts for regional differences in cartilage signal intensity observed in clinical imaging. We hypothesize that regional differences in the degree of cartilage compression are primarily responsible for the observed regional differences in cartilage T2.

Comparative StudySedatives used in pediatric imaging: comparison of IV pentobarbital with IV pentobarbital with midazolam added.
This study was designed to evaluate safety, efficacy, and success of adding IV midazolam to an established IV pentobarbital protocol for pediatric sedation for radiologic imaging. Outcomes included sedation and discharge times as well as adverse events ⋯ Midazolam does not have a beneficial effect on pentobarbital sedation and has no effect on the rate of adverse events. The prolonged time needed both to sedate and to discharge (timed from the initial dose of sedation) pediatric patients who have received midazolam should discourage physicians from combining it with pentobarbital for pediatric sedation.

Sonohysterography for evaluation of the endometrium in women treated with tamoxifen.
This study was performed to evaluate sonohysterography for the diagnosis of endometrial abnormalities in women treated with tamoxifen. ⋯ Sonohysterography aids the diagnosis of endometrial abnormalities in tamoxifen-treated women even if prior endometrial biopsies have negative findings. In 14% of cases, visualization of a normal endometrium on sonohysterography obviated surgery.

Comparative StudyWhole-body MR imaging for detection of bone metastases in children and young adults: comparison with skeletal scintigraphy and FDG PET.
The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of whole-body MR imaging, skeletal scintigraphy, and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) for the detection of bone metastases in children. ⋯ Whole-body MR imaging has a higher sensitivity than skeletal scintigraphy for the detection of bone marrow metastases but a lower sensitivity than FDG PET.
