Comparative StudySensitivity and value of digital CT scout radiography for detecting ureteral stones in patients with ureterolithiasis diagnosed on unenhanced CT.
When unenhanced CT reveals ureterolithiasis, some patients will require baseline or follow-up conventional radiography to help guide clinical management. We sought to determine the sensitivity of routinely obtained scout radiographs for revealing stones to determine if the scout view can be used in place of baseline conventional radiography. ⋯ In our series, 49% of ureteral stones were visible on the often-overlooked routine CT scout radiograph. Imaging of phantoms showed that stone visualization can be optimized by using the lowest kilovoltage settings. Therefore, the CT scout view can be used as a baseline study in patients requiring follow-up radiography and for planning treatment of patients requiring lithotripsy or other intervention. Finally, large stones not visible on scout radiographs are likely composed of uric acid or xanthine.

Comparative StudyEchoplanar MR imaging for ultrafast detection of brain lesions.
We retrospectively evaluated the use of echo-planar imaging for ultrafast detection of brain lesions. ⋯ In this study, echo-planar sequences were as sensitive as conventional spin-echo imaging for the diagnostic assessment of lesions. Echo-planar sequences had a strikingly shorter acquisition time and substantially reduced motion and pulsation artifacts. Echo-planar sequences may be a useful diagnostic tool for use in claustrophobic and unstable patients.

Comparative StudyThe situation of diagnostic radiology training programs and their graduates in 1998.
In light of concerns about the job market, the American College of Radiology studied the employment situation of 1998 graduates from diagnostic radiology training programs and the status and plans of the programs. ⋯ In past years, unemployment of graduates was less than 1% by 6 months after graduation, and that is the likely outcome for 1998 graduates. Employment prospects across all subspecialty areas are approximately equal.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyCorrelation of CT findings with clinical evaluations in 261 patients with symptomatic bronchiectasis.
In a multicenter study, we evaluated the relationships between the extent and severity of bronchiectasis on CT and clinical symptoms, spirometric abnormality, and sputum characteristics. ⋯ In this patient population, we found weak but significant correlations between the degree of morphologic abnormality on CT and the extent of physiologic impairment. Cystic bronchiectasis was associated with sputum purulence and with the growth of Pseudomonas. CT classification of the type of bronchiectasis may be useful as an index of severity of disease.
