Manubriosternal joint abnormalities are often undetected causes of chest pain. Twenty-five normal patients and 40 cadaver specimens were evaluated to establish the normal radiographic anatomy of this articulation. Analysis of the manubriosternal joint was carried out in rheumatoid diseases in order to ascertain the incidence and variety of abnormalities. ⋯ Of 25 patients with ankylosing spondylitis 20 (80%) revealed abnormalities either with erosions or fusion. None of 25 patients with psoriatic arthritis and none of 20 with Reiter syndrome showed erosions or ankylosis. The articulation should be evaluated in rheumatoid diseases and in non-arthritic patients with chest and/or shoulder pain.

In a study of 1,251 persons with asbestos-related pleural and parenchymal changes, 16 had slowly progressive changes of the upper lobes, involving both pleura and parenchyma, with shrinkage of the lobes. In addition there were 41 cases with less advanced apical changes. Tuberculosis and other possible causes were excluded. It is hypothesized that the changes rate due to asbestos disease.

Comparative Study Clinical TrialThrombogenicity of heparin- and non-heparin-coated catheters: clinical trail.
Catheters used in clinical cerebral angiography were examined by scanning electron microscopy for buildup of thrombus. In 21 (67%) of 31 individuals studied with non-heparin-coated catheters, either cell aggregations or thrombi developed compared with seven (28%) of 25 individuals studied with heparin-coated catheters. ⋯ The slopes that estimated the probable rate of thrombus formation were also significantly different (p less than 0.01). This suggests the desirability of replacement of non-heparin-coated catheters if the angiographic procedure is extended.
