Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study
One-year outcomes of the da Vinci Study of VEGF Trap-Eye in eyes with diabetic macular edema.
To compare different doses and dosing regimens of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) Trap-Eye with laser photocoagulation in eyes with diabetic macular edema (DME). ⋯ Significant gains in BCVA from baseline achieved at week 24 were maintained or improved at week 52 in all VEGF Trap-Eye groups. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Trap-Eye warrants further investigation for the treatment of DME.

Multicenter Study
Treatment of refractory uveitis with adalimumab: a prospective multicenter study of 131 patients.
To evaluate adalimumab therapy in refractory uveitis. ⋯ Adalimumab seems to be well tolerated and helpful in decreasing inflammatory activity in refractory uveitis and may reduce steroid requirement. Further controlled studies of adalimumab for uveitis are warranted.

Neuroimaging studies frequently are ordered to investigate neuro-ophthalmic symptoms. When misused, these studies are expensive and time consuming. This study describes the type and frequency of neuroimaging errors in patients referred to an academic neuro-ophthalmology service and measures how frequently these neuroimaging studies were reinterpreted. ⋯ There was a high rate of suboptimal neuroimaging studies performed in patients referred for neuro-ophthalmology examination. These findings have significant implications given the increasing attention to resource use currently and in the near future.

To assess whether stroke rates among patients with retinal disease were influenced by the rapid and sequential uptakes of bevacizumab and ranibizumab for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). ⋯ The rapid uptake of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors for AMD was not associated with a change in the rate of hospitalization for stroke among Ontario seniors with retinal disease. Furthermore, stroke rates in the bevacizumab and ranibizumab periods were not different. These population-level results complement the findings of a recently published trial comparing bevacizumab and ranibizumab, and may assist clinicians and policy makers as they balance the comparative efficacy, safety, and cost of these 2 closely related treatments.

To study the relevance of liver function test (LFT) results for early detection of liver metastasis of uveal melanoma. ⋯ Isolated or combined LFTs for AST, ALT, γGT, LDH, and PA are not helpful for detection of early metastasis. However, the high NPVs suggest that LFT screening can allow clinicians to reassure the patient when the LFT results are negative.
