Dismantling racism in health care demands that medical education promote racial justice throughout all stages of medical training. However, racial bias can be fostered unintentionally, influencing the way we make decisions as clinicians with downstream effects on patient health and health equity. The development of any anti-racism curriculum in medicine requires the ability to identify racial bias in practices we have not previously recognized as explicitly racist or unjust. This has limited the creation and delivery of effective anti-racism education in health care.

Myeloperoxidase: A Circulating Marker of Inflammation and Tooth Infection.
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and tooth infection are common in primary care, and both significantly reduce quality of life. Our study aimed to examine signs of vascular inflammation associated with loss of tooth vitality before and after a single tooth extraction. ⋯ A link between dental infection and circulating levels of inflammation was observed, suggesting that oral infection could be a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular risk stratification is a frequent evaluation performed by health professionals. Not uncommonly, requests for risk stratification involve activities or procedures that fall outside of the scope of current evidence-based guidelines. ⋯ This review focuses on some of these unique requests, each of which are real examples encountered in our practice. We offer guidance by synthesizing the available medical literature and formulating recommendations on topics such as the initiation of testosterone and erectile dysfunction therapy, SCUBA and skydiving, polygraphy, and electroconvulsive therapy.
