There may be nontraditional pathways of chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression that are complementary to classical pathways. Therefore, we aimed to examine nontraditional risk factors for incident CKD and its progression. ⋯ Several nontraditional markers were significantly associated with an increased risk of progression to higher CKD categories in generally healthy young to middle-aged adults.

Myeloperoxidase: A Circulating Marker of Inflammation and Tooth Infection.
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and tooth infection are common in primary care, and both significantly reduce quality of life. Our study aimed to examine signs of vascular inflammation associated with loss of tooth vitality before and after a single tooth extraction. ⋯ A link between dental infection and circulating levels of inflammation was observed, suggesting that oral infection could be a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
