Meningiomas are the most common intracranial neoplasms. Although genomic analysis has helped elucidate differences in survival, there is evidence that racial disparities may influence outcomes. African Americans have a higher incidence of meningiomas and poorer survival outcomes. The etiology of these disparities remains unclear, but may include a combination of pathophysiology and other factors. ⋯ Minority patients are more likely to present with severe symptoms, require longer perioperative hospitalization, and generate higher hospitalization costs. This may be due to socioeconomic factors that affect access to health care. Targeting barriers to access, especially to subspecialty care, may facilitate more appropriate and timely diagnosis, thereby improving patient care and outcomes.

Pediatric brain tumors are an incredibly diverse group of neoplasms and neuropathological tumor classification is an essential part of patient care. Classification of pediatric brain tumors has changed considerably in recent years as molecular diagnostics have become incorporated with routine histopathology in the diagnostic process. This article will focus on the fundamental major histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features that neuropathologists use to make an integrated diagnosis of pediatric brain tumors. This concise review will focus on tumors that are integral to the central nervous system in pediatric patients including: embryonal tumors, low and high grade gliomas, glioneuronal tumors, ependymomas, and choroid plexus tumors.

Increases in the extent of resection of both contrast-enhanced (CE) and non-contrast-enhanced (NCE) tissue are associated with substantial survival benefits in patients with isocitrate dehydrogenase wild-type glioblastoma. The fact, however, remains that these lesions exist within the framework of complex neural circuitry subserving cognition, movement, and behavior, all of which affect the ultimate survival outcome. The prognostic significance of the interplay between CE and NCE cytoreduction and neurological morbidity is poorly understood. ⋯ Our data provide novel evidence for management strategies that prioritize safe and complete resection of CE tissue.

Long-term efficacy and mechanisms of action of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) are under investigation. ⋯ SCG-DBS for TRD is clearly effective in some patients. Active contacts' coordinates were highly variable within the region and, like electrical parameters, did not seem to correlate with clinical outcomes. In the current series, Brodmann area 10 medial and the forceps minor were the most frequently targeted area and modulated pathway, respectively.

Patient-reported quality of life (QOL) is a vital metric for surgical success. ⋯ QOL is worsened after surgery at early time points. Prolactinomas and NFPA enjoy significant QOL improvements from surgery as early as 3 mo postoperatively. Other functional tumors may experience early benefits in younger patients without hypopituitarism and when isolated to the sellar/suprasellar region. These findings provide valuable information for counseling patients and setting expectations for surgery.
