Effect of initial combination therapy with sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, and metformin on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
To assess the efficacy and safety of initial combination therapy with sitagliptin and metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes and inadequate glycemic control on diet and exercise. ⋯ The initial combination of sitagliptin and metformin provided substantial and additive glycemic improvement and was generally well tolerated in patients with type 2 diabetes.

BMI versus the metabolic syndrome in relation to cardiovascular risk in elderly Chinese individuals.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the associations of BMI versus metabolic syndrome with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in elderly Chinese individuals. ⋯ Both overweight and metabolic syndrome are highly prevalent in this elderly Chinese population. BMI, as a measure of overall adiposity, is strongly associated with increased prevalence of CVD independent of metabolic syndrome.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of diabetic nephropathy among urban Asian-Indian type 2 diabetic subjects. ⋯ The results of the study suggest that in urban Asian Indians, the prevalence of overt nephropathy and microalbuminuria was 2.2 and 26.9%, respectively. Duration of diabetes, A1C, and systolic blood pressure were the common risk factors for overt nephropathy and microalbuminuria.
