It is estimated that the Roma are the largest ethnic minority population in Europe (HSE in Roma Intercultural Guide, 2020). There is a dearth of information in the Irish medical literature on the Roma in Ireland. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the Roma in Ireland, to identify Roma-specific culture, family structure, paediatric illness, and health equality within the context of the Irish population. ⋯ Often overlooked, small indigenous groups or nomadic races have unmet medical needs (National Traveller and Roma Inclusion Strategy in Justice.ie, 2017). Across Europe, they have a lower life expectancy and higher burden of illness due to lower socioeconomic status, discrimination, and poor access to health services (National Traveller and Roma Inclusion Strategy in Justice.ie, 2017). Cultural competence is necessary to provide effective healthcare.

Meatal stenosis following three types of circumcision with frenular artery preservation (FAP), the Plastibell device (PD), and frenular artery ligation (FAL): a long-term follow-up.
Despite the simplicity of male circumcision, complications occur frequently. Post-circumcision meatal stenosis is a concerning complication that might require several interventions. ⋯ The present study revealed that the technique preserving the frenular artery is associated with a significantly lower incidence of meatal stenosis. Hence, the FAP is the recommended technique for circumcision as compared to two other methods.

There are disparities in the availability of systemic anticancer therapies (SACTs) globally. We set out to investigate the cost and reimbursement of SACTs in the United Kingdom (UK) and the Republic of Ireland (ROI) in conjunction with efficacy and licensing authority decisions in the United States (US) and the European Union (EU). ⋯ Our study highlights that many licensed systemic anticancer treatments are not currently reimbursed in ROI/UK. The high cost of these medicines is independent of the presence of an OS benefit. Collaboration between regulatory agencies, governments and industry partners is needed to ensure health expenditure is directed towards the most effective treatments.

Fatty liver disease and fibrosis are common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Recently published European Association for the Study of the Liver guidelines have suggested screening such patients using liver stiffness measurement (LSM) or fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4) to exclude advanced fibrosis. ⋯ Screening of patients with T2DM using LSM alone rather than FIB-4 leads to reduced numbers of, and more appropriate, referrals to the hepatology clinic. Shifting from an exclusion (LSM < 8 kPa) to an inclusion based (LSM ≥ 10 kPa) approach may lessen the potential of screening to overwhelm hepatology services.

In January 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic started and has severely affected all countries around the world. The clinical symptoms alone are not sufficient for a proper diagnosis. Thus, molecular tests are required. Various institutes and researchers developed real-time PCR-based methods for the detection of the virus. However, the method needs expensive equipment. In the present study, we developed a real-time NASBA assay for the detection of SARS-CoV-2. ⋯ The results of the present study show that the developed real-time NASBA is a sensitive and specific method for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 and is comparable with real-time PCR. NASBA is an isothermal signal amplification method, and if stand-alone fluorescent readers are available, the real-time NASBA can be used without the need for expensive thermocyclers. In addition compared to other isothermal methods like LAMP, the primer design is straightforward. Thus, real-time NASBA could be a suitable method for inexpensive SARS-CoV-2 detection.
