To describe a nursing staffing surge model in critical care units that can be used during a pandemic or crisis. This model may give useful guidance for hospitals or centers that must immediately react in response to the devastating challenges introduced by disease outbreaks. ⋯ The team-based approach and other strategies included in this article can help support critical care units with staff during crises. However, we strongly recommend developing a nursing deployment policy that makes staff redeployment and re-allocation smoother, whenever needed.

To describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stress, resilience and depression in health professionals from a public hospital in Barcelona, Spain after the first peak of pandemic. ⋯ Government policy shifts are needed in Spain to improve nurses' workforce conditions, enhance the ratio of nurses to patient numbers, and avoid workforce losses. Maintaining the resilience of health professionals would assist in improving their health and their capacity to possible future emergency situations.

To survey nurses' opinions about their work conditions at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. ⋯ Our survey gathered nurses' views at the pandemic's onset. The evidence gathered is being used to advise policymakers and nursing organizations to take actions to control public health risks to populations. It is necessary that more investment in growing nursing workforce expertise and health infrastructure for pandemic and epidemic emergencies is provided.

To identify factors underlying ethical conflict occurring during the current COVID-19 pandemic in the critical care setting. ⋯ Learning more about these factors can help nurses, other health professionals, and policymakers to focus their efforts on minimizing the impact of the ethical consequences of a crisis of this scale. This will enable changes in organizational policies, improvement in clinical competencies, and development of the scope of practice.

To investigate nurses' core emergency competencies for handling the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) and analyse the factors associated with those competencies. ⋯ Managers should improve relevant policies to ensure that nurses have more opportunities to participate in the practical training of health emergencies and explore effective training methods to improve the ability of nurses to respond to these.
