Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is a mechanical device that increases cardiac output by increasing diastolic blood flow to the coronary arteries and lowers the afterload of the left ventricle in systole. IABP is primarily used in acute heart failure, that includes patients that have to undergo coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Its usage, however, in cardiac surgery has been declining with ongoing controversy regarding its benefits. The aim of this study was to assess the use and indications and outcome of IABP related to CABG surgery. ⋯ Less than 5% of patients received IABP in relation to CABG in Iceland and the rate hasn't changed much for the last 18 years. Both the complication rate and 30-day mortality was higher in patients in IABP group and both the long term and MACCE-free survival was much worse, probably mostly related to worse overall clinical condition of the patient that received IABP.

Fetal medicine is a subspecialty of obstetrics investigating the development, growth and disease of the human fetus. Often, the mother is part of the definition of the subspecialty where maternal diseases specific to pregnancy are included and therefore named Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM). It is appropriate to have one subspecialty for the maternal-fetal unit and the Icelandic subspecialty is named accordingly; "Prenatal diagnosis and maternal diseases". ⋯ In Iceland the subspecialization is less advanced. This article describes common tasks of the fetal medicine physician and examples are given where advances in technology have changed management for instance in aneuploidy screening, Rhesus allo-immunization and fetal interventions. Finally, the establishment of the Nordic Network of Fetal Medicine is described.

There is limited research on the long-term benefits of an interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation, even though short-term benefits have been well documented. The present study evaluated the effects of an interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation program with a three-year follow-up. A special emphasis was placed on economic evaluation of the treatment from a societal perspective. ⋯ The results indicate that interdisciplinary rehabilitation for chronic pain has a positive impact on function and the experience of pain as well as positive psychosocial effect. An economic evaluation of the treatment shows that the rehabilitation is very cost effective and that each Icelandic krona (IKR) spent is returned eightfold back to society.
