Case ReportsAcrokeratosis paraneoplastica of Bazex as an indicator for underlying squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.
Obligatory cutaneous paraneoplastic disorders comprising acanthosis nigricans maligna, erythema gyratum repens, paraneoplastic pemphigus, hypertrichosis lanuginosa acquisita, erythema necrolyticum migrans and acrokeratosis paraneoplastica are rare. However, as markers of an underlying internal malignancy they are of utmost importance for the patient. Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica (first described by Gougerot and Rupp in 1922) was named after Bazex who had then reported several cases in a French dermatological journal since 1965 (Bazex et al. in Bull Soc Fr Dermatol Syphiligr 72:182, 1965; Bazex and Griffiths in Br J Dermatol 102:301-306, 1980). ⋯ Identification of a paraneoplastic syndrome may enhance the earlier diagnosis of the associated tumor and may thus enable curative treatment.

Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialThe benefit of bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals in the treatment of metastatic bone pain.
The surface bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals rhenium-188-HEDP (188Re-HEDP) and samarium-153-EDTMP (153Sm-EDTMP) were investigated to determine the efficacy and toxicity in pain palliation in bone metastases. ⋯ Both radiopharmaceuticals were effective in pain palliation, without induction of severe side effects or significant differences in therapeutic efficacy or toxicity.

ReviewBasic science going clinical: molecularly targeted therapy of chronic myelogenous leukemia.
Imatinib (STI571), a 2-phenylaminopyrimidine, specifically inhibits the tyrosine kinase activity of Abl, Kit, and platelet-derived growth factor receptor. Clinical trials in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), characterized by the constitutively active Bcr-Abl tyrosine kinase, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors, characterized by activating mutations of Kit, have shown excellent results. ⋯ Room will be given to problems and challenges that may be typical of molecularly targeted therapy in general, such as the emergence of resistance as a result of point mutations. Last, the question will be addressed, why imatinib is so successful, and whether its success might be reproducible in other malignant conditions.

Initial experience with a novel desensitization strategy for carboplatin-associated hypersensitivity reactions: carboplatin-hypersensitivity reactions.
Carboplatin hypersensitivity is an increasingly recognized toxicity in individuals receiving >6 cumulative courses of this important antineoplastic agent. We wished to determine if a novel multi-pronged approach to re-treating patients with a high risk for this potentially serious side effect could permit the safe delivery of this class of cytotoxic drugs. ⋯ In this preliminary report of a limited patient population, we have demonstrated the ability to safely deliver a platinum agent to individuals with either documented carboplatin hypersensitivity, or a high risk for this potentially serious toxicity of carboplatin. Further exploration of this novel management strategy in a larger group of patients is indicated.
