Twenty-five brands of Canadian commercial cigarettes were analyzed for tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) in tobacco and in mainstream smoke as well as for nitrate in tobacco. Preformed N'-nitrosonor-nicotine (NNN) in the tobacco ranged from 265 ng to 979 ng/cigarette, preformed 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) ranged from 465 ng to 878 ng/cigarette. The mainstream smoke concentration for NNN was between 5 ng and 39 ng/cigarette and for NNK between 5 ng and 97 Ng/cigarette. ⋯ However, no correlation between the level of preformed TSNA in tobacco and the tar delivery in mainstream smoke could be observed. It is demonstrated that the good correlation between the tar and TSNA deliveries in mainstream smoke can only be attributed to the unusual good correlation between the tar delivery and the ventilation ratio. For the cigarettes investigated, which seemed to be Virginia-type cigarettes, with few exceptions, the ventilation ratio had a much higher influence on the mainstream smoke concentration than the level of preformed TSNA in tobacco.

Clinical features of nodular paragranuloma (Hodgkin's disease, lymphocyte predominance type, nodular).
Clinical aspects of 145 cases of nodular paragranuloma (nodular subtype of lymphocyte predominance type of Hodgkin's disease) were investigated. There was a marked male predominance, and the age curve showed a peak in the 4th decade. In a majority of cases lymphadenopathy developed within 1 year. ⋯ The recurrent tumors developed locally in a majority of cases. There was transformation of nodular paragranuloma into another subtype of Hodgkin's disease in only four cases. Five cases showed transformation into large-cell tumors that resembled immunoblastic lymphoma and require further immunological study.

Analysis of metastatic spread and growth of tumor cells in mice with depressed natural killer activity by anti-asialo GM1 antibody or anticancer agents.
The mechanism of artificial and spontaneous metastases of tumor was analyzed in B16 melanoma cells and C57BL/6 mice by using anti-asialo GM1 antibody and anticancer agents. Single administrations of 500 micrograms anti-asialo GM1 antibody resulted in significantly decreased NK activity in spleen cells of C57BL/6 mice, lasting 10 days from the day following administration. Treatment with anti-asialo GM1 antibody never decreased the function of T lymphocytes measured by blastogenesis with phytohemagglutinin or T cell growth factor. ⋯ In contrast, the MED of cDDP showed no effect on the NK activity or the numbers of pulmonary and liver metastases. These results indicate that the depression of NK activity induced by chemotherapy results in the promotion of metastatic disease. From these studies it can be concluded that NK cells have a key role in the control of metastases of malignant disease, and that support of NK activity is very important for the prevention of metastases.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialAdjuvant chemotherapy in osteosarcoma - effects of cisplatinum, BCD, and fibroblast interferon in sequential combination with HD-MTX and adriamycin. Preliminary results of the COSS 80 study.
In a cooperative adjuvant chemotherapy study of osteosarcoma (COSS-80), 192 patients were registered from December 1979 to March 1982. Forty-one patients have been excluded from study because of their nonadjuvant situation, therapy-limiting clinical conditions, or inadequate diagnosis. One hundred and fifty-one patients have been randomized to receive either the drug combination bleomycin + cyclophosphamide + dactinomycin (BCD) or cisplatinum (CPL) within a course of sequential multidrug chemotherapy including adriamycin (ADR) and high dose methotrexate (HDMTX). ⋯ The majority of patients received some kind of limb-salvage treatment without local recurrences so far. A statistically insignificant but intriguing tendency for a slightly higher incidence of pulmonary metastases after resection as opposed to amputation could be detected. Similar to observations in the previous study COSS-77.

Incidence of cancer in India is lower than in the West and the commonly affected sites are very different. Cancers of the upper alimentary and respiratory tracts (oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, and lung) contribute more than half of the cancers in men and about a quarter in women. ⋯ Cancer of the cervix uteri is a major problem in women and cancer of the penis in men is relatively common in some parts of the country. Practical measures are discussed for the prevention of these cancers common in India.
