Saposhnikovia divaricata (SD), called "Fangfeng" in China, is commonly used in clinical compound prescription for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but its actions on RA have not been clarified. The present study aims to determine the anti-inflammatory activity of SD chromone extract (SCE), the major bioactive component of SD, on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rats, and elucidate its underlying mechanisms with regards to its molecular basis of action on human fibroblast-like synoviocytes derived from RA patients (HFLS-RA). ⋯ These results highlight the anti-arthritic potential of SCE, and provide further evidence of the involvement of the NF-κB and MARKs inhibition in the effects of SCE.

Liangxue Huayu Recipe (LHR) as a classical prescription is clinically employed to treat liver diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. ⋯ These results indicate that LHR is effective in attenuating hepatocyte apoptosis both in vivo and in vitro, and this effect is partly mediated through the activation of the mitochondrial pathway and subsequent regulation of particular pro-apoptotic gene expression.

Mosla scabra (Thunb.) C.Y. Wu, belonging to the Labiatae family, is a tomentose and aromatic plant, which is widely used as an antipyretic and antiviral drug for pulmonary diseases and famous for its efficiency in treating colds, fever, pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. To investigate therapeutic effects and possible mechanism of Mosla scabra flavonoids (MF) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) in mice. ⋯ These results showed MF significantly attenuate LPS-induced acute lung injury and production of inflammatory mediators via inhibiting MAPK and NF-κB activation, indicating it as a potential therapeutic agent for ALI.

In Chinese traditional medicine, the peels of Punica granatum L. have been used to treat traumatic hemorrhage, burn, and ulcers. ⋯ SPRE was more active as an anti-inflammatory agent than EA. The anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of SPRE were achieved through inhibiting the leukocyte infiltration and modulating the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-β and TNF-α. These results clearly demonstrated that SPRE is a promising phytomedicine that could find use in the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

Taraxasterol was isolated from the Chinese medicinal herb Taraxacum officinale which has been frequently used as a remedy for inflammatory diseases. In the present study, we determined the in vivo protective effect of taraxasterol on allergic asthma induced by ovalbumin (OVA) in mice. ⋯ This finding suggests that taraxasterol protects against OVA-induced allergic asthma in mice.
