Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) is the main effective component of Panax notoginseng, have various pharmacologic activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and estrogen-like bioactivities, have been shown to be an effective agent on anti-osteoporosis. Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) play a crucial homeostatic role in skeletal modeling and remodeling due to their capability to differentiate into osteooblasts. Whether PNS has effect on osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs are unknown. This study was designed to investigate the effects of PNS on the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs in vitro. ⋯ PNS could stimulate BMSCs proliferation and promote their osteogenic differentiation by up-regulation expression of osteogenic marker gene and down-regulation expression of adipogenic marker gene in a dose-dependent manner. Thus, PNS may play an important therapeutic role in osteoporosis patients by improving osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs.

This present study was carried out to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of 85% ethanol extract (EE) of Commiphora myrrha and its different fractions partitioned with petroleum ether extract (EPE), ethyl acetate extract (EEA), n-butanol extract (EBu), and the water extract (ECY). Moreover, the chemical constituents in EPE were analyzed and identified by UPLC-QTOF/MS/MS. ⋯ These data demonstrated that the EE and EPE posses analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities and may support the fact the traditional application of this herb in treating various diseases associated with inflammatory pain.

Symplocos cochinchinensis (Lour.) S. Moore. is used in Indian system of traditional medicine to treat diabetes mellitus. The present study aims to investigate the antidiabetic efficacy of the hexane extract of Symplocos cochinchinensis leaves in high fat diet-low streptozotocin (STZ) induced type 2 diabetic rats. ⋯ This study demonstrated the potential antidiabetic property of hexane extract of Symplocos cochinchinensis leaves on type 2 diabetes mellitus, thus justifying its traditional usage.

Polygalae radix, the root of Polygala tenuifolia Willd, has commonly been used for the treatment of amnesia and anxiety in traditional Korean medicine. The aim of this study was to investigate its neuroprotective effects and possible mechanisms of action in models of Parkinson's disease. ⋯ PRE significantly inhibited 6-OHDA-induced cell damage at doses of 0.05-1μg/ml with a maximal effect at 0.1μg/ml. Caspase-3 activity and the production of ROS and NO were alleviated at 0.1μg/ml. Also at this dose, PRE protected mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons from MPP(+)-induced toxicity. In an in vivo mouse model of PD, PRE protected dopaminergic neurons and fibers from MPTP-induced toxicity in the SNpc and ST. These results demonstrate that PRE has protective effects on dopaminergic neurons via its anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic activity.

This review provides a summary of Mexican medicinal flora in terms of ethnobotanical, pharmacology, and chemistry of natural products related to anticancer activity. ⋯ Clearly, this review indicates that it is time to increase the number of experimental studies and to begin to conduct clinical trials with those Mexican plants and its active compounds selected by in vitro and in vivo activities. Also, the mechanisms of action by which plant extracts and their active compounds exert anti-cancer effects remain to be studied.
