To study the importance of routine human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening in patients with ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) and describe their clinical features and management. ⋯ OSSN was the presenting sign of underlying HIV infection in 26% cases, and 70% were unaware of their HIV-positive status prior to HIV screening. In this study, T2 tumor was most common, and 26% cases required extended enucleation/orbital exenteration to achieve complete tumor resection.

To report the experience of our center with the use of adalimumab (ADA) for the treatment of severe refractory noninfectious paediatric uveitis. The study is a retrospective case series of all paediatric patients with refractory uveitis who were treated with ADA at the Paediatric Uveitis Unit of our center from 2008 to 2015. We present 12 patients (6 Juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis, 4 idiopathic panuveitis, 1 early-onset sarcoidosis-associated panuveitis, and 1 intermediate uveitis), with uveitis in 19/24 eyes. ⋯ Nine out of the 12 patients had structural damage before ADA could be started: cataract (n = 4), glaucoma (n = 2), cystic macular edema (n = 1), exudative retinal detachment (n = 1), and optic disk edema (n = 5). Visual acuity improved or maintained stable in 17/19 affected eyes, and only 2 eyes decreased its visual acuity because of structural damage, which was already present before ADA therapy. In our experience, ADA presents a good safety profile and is efficacious in the treatment of paediatric patients with different forms of refractory noninfectious uveitis.

There has been a rapid rise in the use of intravitreal injections, such as anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents, performed over the past few years for the treatment of ocular neovascular diseases. This study aims to review the systemic and ocular adverse events among patients treated at a tertiary eye center over a period of 8 years. A retrospective review of all intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF performed over an 8-year period at a tertiary eye care center in Singapore was done. ⋯ Ocular complications included one (0.007 %) endophthalmitis, three (0.021 %) traumatic cataracts, and one (0.007 %) retinal detachment. Rates of death and thromboembolic events were similar among ranibizumab (lucentis), bevacizumab (avastin) and aflibercept (Eylea). The systemic and ocular complications associated with intravitreal injections among Asian patients at a tertiary eye center are relatively low and reflect the safety of the treatments.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the long-term clinical results of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) combined with mitomycin C (MMC) for reconstruction of conjunctival defects created during the excision of ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN). Eight consecutive eyes of seven patients (five males and two females; mean age, 64 ± 19 years) treated by one surgeon (KH) were included in this study. AMT was performed after excision of a mass region, along with 0.04 % MMC treatment for the exposed sclera. ⋯ No severe complications, such as infections, corneal or scleral thinning, or ulceration developed in all cases. The combination of AMT and MMC is effective for safe reconstruction over the long-term after the excision of OSSN with postoperative careful observation and treatment. In recurrent tumor excision cases, AMT is a suitable technique for repeated ocular surface reconstruction.

The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology, visual outcome and prognostic factors of intraocular foreign body (IOFB) injuries in a tertiary centre in Hong Kong. A retrospective review of 21 eyes in 21 patients with IOFB that presented to United Christian Hospital from January 2001 to July 2014 was performed. IOFB represented 16 % of all open-globe traumas. ⋯ This is the first local study that explores the epidemiology of IOFB injuries in Hong Kong. The favourable visual outcome and low endophthalmitis rate may be related to early removal of IOFB. Despite legal ordinances for mandatory eye protection, the uptake of eye protection was low.
