Case ReportsMultiple calcifying fibrous pseudotumor of the bilateral pleura.
Calcifying fibrous pseudotumor is a rare lesion characterized histologically by hypocellular hyalinized collagenous tissue with calcifications and patchy lymphocytes infiltration. Occurring most often in children and young adults, calcifying fibrous pseudotumor is a clinically benign lesion that can form over a broad anatomic distribution, including in subcutaneous and deep soft tissues, but is rarely found in the pleura. The cause and mechanisms of pathogenesis of calcifying fibrous pseudotumor are unknown. ⋯ We discuss the differential diagnosis with other benign or malignant soft tissue diseases and also review the recent literature on this rare benign entity. Complete resection of all disseminated lesions was possible with followed thoracotomy. Although multiple lesions may prevent the complete resection and calcifying fibrous pseudotumor of the pleura is considered as benign lesion, complete surgical resection of all lesions seems to be the best therapy for calcifying fibrous pseudotumor of the pleura to reduce additional dissemination and local recurrence.

Involvement of a psychiatric consultation service in a palliative care team at the Japanese cancer center hospital.
Close collaboration between the cancer care team service and the psychiatric consultation service is recommended to provide adequate comprehensive care to cancer patients. In Japan, specialized palliative care teams work in conjunction with consultation-liaison psychiatrists as an essential members. There are, however, few studies reporting on these services. ⋯ Psychiatric problems are common in cancer patients of the palliative care team. The palliative care team should assess the psychiatric problems in cancer patients, and the involvement of the consultation-liaison psychiatrists in the palliative care teams may be one of the strategies to establish the psychosocial support for cancer patients in the acute hospital settings.

Effect of delayed maximal androgen blockade therapy for patients with advanced prostate cancer who fail to respond to initial androgen deprivation monotherapy.
We analyzed the efficacy of additional antiandrogens as second- and third-line treatments after the failure of initial androgen deprivation monotherapy. ⋯ In this study, the second- and third-line treatments were effective for patients with advanced prostate cancer. Nadir prostate-specific antigen during androgen deprivation monotherapy and prostate-specific antigen doubling time just after the failure of androgen deprivation monotherapy are factors that can predict the prognosis.

ReviewDevelopment of palliative medicine for cancer patients in Japan: from isolated voluntary effort to integrated multidisciplinary network.
The paradigm of palliative care in cancer medicine has shifted from only care of terminally ill patients to earlier intervention for them in the recent 15 years. The concept of palliative medicine was founded in Japan in the 1970s. ⋯ According to the aim of the Cancer Control Act established in Japan (2006), patients and their families will be able to access easily integrated high-quality cancer care wherever they live at the time of 2016. Systematic and continuous education for medical staff is mandatory, and a major breakthrough for achieving this purpose would be to increase the number of courses and faculties in palliative medicine at most universities in Japan.
