Economic Burden of Osteoporosis in South Korea: Claim Data of the National Health Insurance Service from 2008 to 2011.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the current economic burden of osteoporosis in South Korea using national claim data of the Korean National Health Insurance Service (KNHIS) from 2008 to 2011. Patients aged 50 years or older were identified from KNHIS nationwide database for all records of outpatient visits or hospital admissions. Healthcare costs for osteoporotic patients included direct medical costs for hospitalization, outpatient care, and prescription drugs for the year after discharge. ⋯ However, cost per person was the opposite. Osteoporosis entails substantial epidemiologic and economic burden in South Korea. This study provides information about the total healthcare burden, which could be important when determining what attention and awareness osteoporosis should be given in the public health system.
