This study was undertaken to determine what smoking cessation services dental professionals in Ontario's Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Health Unit (WDGHU) provide before disseminating a smoking cessation information package. ⋯ This survey indicates that most dental professionals in the WDGHU do not provide proven smoking cessation services. An opportunity exists to increase the proportion of dental professionals providing proven smoking cessation interventions as part of routine patient services.

Dentistry began to incorporate informed consent and risk management into its practice after 1950. Today, an obligation to ensure that the patient has accepted a given treatment and understands all its implications are part of a dentist"s prime responsibilities. The purpose of this article is to inform dentists who are asking for consent that they can use a tool to make this task easier--the personalized consent form.

This article describes the case of a 78-year-old patient whose mandibular fracture was treated with miniplate osteosynthesis. After initial treatment, panoramic radiography revealed a fracture of the miniplate, and at follow-up, a loosening of the replacement plate. For the dental practitioner, this clinical case highlights the importance of panoramic radiography and occlusal analysis and stabilization for diagnosis of mandibular fracture, evaluation of miniplate fracture and treatment, especially in the absence of trauma.

Acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioids are available as analgesics in dentistry. They each have specific advantages, disadvantages, indications and contraindications. This article provides a brief review of their role in the management of acute postoperative pain.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an increasingly common pedagogical method in health sciences education. Medicine has led the way, but many health science educators in other disciplines have begun to use PBL or are looking seriously at introducing it. There is far less information available about the extent and the scope of PBL in dental education than in medical education. ⋯ S.). Twenty-two institutions reported that PBL was being used, and 6 of the remaining 27 indicated that they planned to use PBL in the future. For the most part, PBL was used only in certain parts of the curricula, most commonly during the early years.
