Cutoff Values to Interpret Short-term Treatment Outcomes After Arthroscopic Meniscal Surgery, Measured With the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score.
To determine the proportions of patients who (1) perceived their symptoms to be satisfactory, (2) perceived their treatment to have failed, or (3) perceived that they improved to an important degree at 3 months after arthroscopic meniscal surgery; and to determine Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) subscale scores corresponding to the Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS), treatment failure, and the minimal important change (MIC) for improvement. ⋯ At 3 months after meniscal surgery, approximately half of the patients perceived their symptoms to have improved to an important degree, 4 in every 10 patients perceived their symptoms to be satisfactory, and 2 in every 10 patients perceived the treatment to have failed. Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyOn a Trajectory for Success-9 in Every 10 People With a Degenerative Meniscus Tear Have Improved Knee Function Within 2 Years After Treatment: A Secondary Exploratory Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.
To identify trajectories of patient-reported knee function over 5 years in patients with degenerative meniscal tears, and to explore whether baseline characteristics were associated with trajectories of sport and recreational function. ⋯ We found 3 distinct trajectories of patient-reported knee function over 5 years: (1) low, minimal improvement, (2) moderate, gradual improvement, and (3) high, early improvement. Nine in every 10 participants improved at least gradually over 2 years after diagnosis of a degenerative meniscal tear. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2021;51(6):289-297. EditorialMusculoskeletal Physical Therapy After COVID-19: Time for a New "Normal".
In late 2019, a previously unknown coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19), was reported in Wuhan, China. Similar to the polio virus epidemic, the fear, uncertainty, and collective response associated with COVID-19 have disrupted daily life on a global scale. In this editorial, we argue that it is time for musculoskeletal physical therapists to grasp the opportunity provided by the COVID-19 pandemic to provide care that is (1) primarily active, (2) focused on self-efficacy and self-management, and (3) far less reliant on passive therapies. The challenge of overuse raises important questions for those in the business of musculoskeletal health care. What is the right number of physical therapy visits for a given condition? Can a practice provide "less" but still be profitable? In this, the editorial on overcoming overuse of musculoskeletal health care, we consider the economic drivers of overuse in the private sector.
