EditorialPatients as Partners in Research: It's the Right Thing to Do.
The health research landscape is changing, and it is time for the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy (JOSPT) community to foster authentic opportunities for patient engagement in musculoskeletal research and practice. Although authentic engagement has challenges, the benefits are well worth the investment of time and energy to overcome these challenges and improve the quality of physical therapy research. In this editorial, the authors outline 3 steps JOSPT is taking to promote and support patient partnership in musculoskeletal research. Case ReportsFifth Metatarsal Avulsion Fracture in an Adolescent Tennis Player.
A 17-year-old male tennis player presented to physical therapy via direct access with complaints of intermittent left lateral foot pain. Due to positive fracture testing and application of the Ottawa foot/ankle rules, an orthopaedist was consulted and radiographic imaging was performed. A 26-year-old male presented with an ache deep to the angle of the left mandible and moderate, constant pain with swallowing, symptoms that had begun 3 years earlier. He was diagnosed with Eagle syndrome, characterized by cervical oropharynx pain due to an elongated styloid process. ⋯ Six weeks later, the patient reported that he was able to swallow with only minimal, intermittent discomfort. Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffectiveness of Foot Orthoses Versus Corticosteroid Injection for Plantar Heel Pain: The SOOTHE Randomized Clinical Trial.
Plantar heel pain is a common foot complaint that causes significant disability and poorer health-related quality of life. A US Navy sailor was seen at an emergency department after falling on her outstretched hand. A computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated a comminuted, nondisplaced dorsal hamate fracture. ⋯ Following 4 weeks of physical therapy, a third CT scan was performed and demonstrated partial fracture healing without displacement, so physical therapy continued.
