Patients With Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy Exhibit Differences in Ankle Biomechanics as Opposed to Strength and Range of Motion.
Study Design Controlled laboratory study; cross-sectional. Background Little is known about ankle range of motion (ROM) and strength among patients with insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) and whether limited ankle ROM and plantar flexor weakness impact IAT symptom severity. Objectives The purposes of the study were (1) to examine whether participants with IAT exhibit limited non-weight-bearing dorsiflexion ROM, reduced plantar flexor strength, and/or altered ankle biomechanics during stair ascent; and (2) to determine which impairments are associated with symptom severity. ⋯ However, altered ankle biomechanics during stair ascent were linked with greater symptom severity and likely contribute to decreased function. Translation, Cross-cultural Adaptation, and Clinimetric Testing of Instruments Used to Assess Patients With Ankle Sprain in the Brazilian Population.
Study Design Clinical measurement study. Background Ankle sprain is a common condition. Therefore, translated, culturally adapted, and clinimetrically tested instruments for measuring the ankle are needed. ⋯ Conclusion The Brazilian-Portuguese versions of the SAFAS, GROC, NPRS, and AOFAS had acceptable measurement properties in high-performing athletes. Effects of Age on Strength and Morphology of Toe Flexor Muscles.
Study Design Descriptive, cross-sectional. Background Age-related muscle atrophy is common in lower-limb muscles. A 29-year-old man experienced right shoulder pain and weakness following a forced abduction and external rotation motion performed during an Australian football game. The following morning, the sports medicine physician referred the player for magnetic resonance imaging to exclude infraspinatus rupture, given the external rotation strength deficit. Discord Between Approaches to Spinal and Extremity Disorders: Is It Logical?
Rapid advances in the basic, clinical, and behavioral sciences are molding developments in conservative management of musculoskeletal disorders. Curiously, there seems to be discord developing between approaches to the assessment and management of patients, depending on whether they present with an extremity or spinal disorder. ⋯ Rather, the aim is to stimulate thought on the seeming discord in clinical practice, with respect to both the clinical evaluation of, as well as management approaches to, extremity and spinal disorders.
