Over the past 2 decades, podcasting has become an easy and inexpensive way to disseminate information. Given the increasing importance of podcasts in medicine and medical education, it is important to understand the current status of diverse voices on podcasts. The primary objective of this study was to describe the distribution of women and men as hosts and guest speakers among 3 popular emergency medicine podcasts across a 10-year period. The secondary objective was to evaluate the association between host gender and speaker gender. ⋯ Among the 3 popular emergency medicine podcasts, there are few women speakers, hosts, and guest speakers; however, the proportion has risen over the past 10 years.

A Prospective Observational Cohort Comparison of SARS-CoV-2 Seroprevalence Between Paramedics and Matched Blood Donors in Canada During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
SARS-CoV-2 represents an occupational risk to paramedics, who work in uncontrolled environments. We sought to identify the occupation-specific risk to paramedics by comparing their seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection-specific antibodies to that of blood donors in Canada. ⋯ Overall, paramedics demonstrated similar evidence of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection to that of blood donors. However, among unvaccinated individuals, evidence of prior infection was higher among paramedics compared to blood donors.

Little is known about the out-of-hospital blood pressure ranges associated with optimal outcomes in traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Our objective was to evaluate the associations between out-of-hospital systolic blood pressure (SBP) and multiple hospital outcomes without assuming any predefined thresholds for hypotension, normotension, or hypertension. ⋯ Optimal adjusted mortality was associated with a surprisingly high SBP range (130 to 180 mmHg). Below this level, there was no point or range of inflection that would indicate a physiologically meaningful threshold for defining hypotension. Nonmortality outcomes showed very similar patterns. These findings highlight how sensitive the injured brain is to compromised perfusion at SBP levels that, heretofore, have been considered adequate or even normal. While the study design does did not allow us to conclude that the currently recommended treatment threshold (<90 mmHg) should be increased, the findings imply that the definition of hypotension in the setting of TBI is too low. Randomized trials evaluating treatment levels significantly higher than 90 mmHg are needed.

To evaluate aerosol dispersion and exposure risk during oxygenation therapy among health care personnel. ⋯ Strong flow from the oxygenation devices resulted in increased aerosol concentrations. CPAP at the feet side, BiPAP at the head side, HFNC, and NCO with face coverings significantly increase aerosol exposure and should be used with caution. Aerosol concentrations at all positions were lower with NRM and VAPOX.

To characterize the emergency medicine resident physician workforce and the residency programs training them. ⋯ The number of emergency medicine residency programs has increased; most new programs were added to the states that already had emergency medicine residency programs. There is an emergency physician "desert" in the rural United States, lacking both residents and residency training programs. This analysis provides essential context to the ongoing conversation about the future of the emergency physician workforce.
