Case ReportsA fatal presentation of dermatomyositis with facial swelling.
Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is the most common inflammatory autoimmune myopathy in children. Most common presentations consist of heliotrophic rash and/or gottron's papules in addition to proximal muscle weakness. A typical presentations have been reported. ⋯ He had elevated transaminases but no detectable muscle weakness. A muscle biopsy was consistent with juvenile dermatomyositis. This case highlights the need to consider dermatomyositis in cases of facial swelling and the use of aggressive immunosuppressive therapies due to its associated vasculopathies.

Case ReportsTongue entrapment in aluminum water bottle: discussion of removal and airway management.
Tongue entrapment in a bottle neck is rare, with few cases reported in the literature. Reported here is the case of a child who presented to the Emergency Department with her tongue entrapped in an aluminum bottle. ⋯ These include sedated mechanical removal of the strangulating object and transnasal fiberoptic intubation. We review published cases and the options for removal of an entrapped tongue from a bottle neck, and we discuss the importance of airway management.

Randomized Controlled TrialEfficacy of buffered hypertonic saline nasal irrigation in children with symptomatic allergic rhinitis: a randomized double-blind study.
Nasal irrigation has been used as an adjunctive therapy of allergic rhinitis (AR). Available evidence suggested that buffered hypertonic saline (BHS) is superior to buffer normal saline (BNS) for relief nasal symptoms. ⋯ Nasal irrigation with BHS causes an improvement in SCT, TNSS and QoL compare to NS in children with symptomatic AR.

Laryngotracheal reconstruction and cricotracheal resection in children: recent experience at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Surgery for paediatric airway stenosis is constantly evolving. Surgery is the primary treatment modality via either an open or endoscopic approach. The objective of this study was to review the results of laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR) and cricotracheal resection (CTR) procedures performed at Great Ormond Street Hospital over the past 10 years. ⋯ Subglottic stenosis in children needs to be approached on the basis of the nature and severity of stenosis and the individual patient's general health. Good outcomes are achieved with both LTR and CTR. Good results are obtained both with single-stage and two-stage LTR, but restenosis remains a problem. An individual approach is required for treatment of paediatric airway stenosis to achieve good final outcomes. The overall success rate has increased only marginally in our institution over the last 20 years.

Protective role of resveratrol against cisplatin induced ototoxicity in guinea pigs.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of systemic administration of resveratrol against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in guinea pigs. ⋯ These results indicated that systemic administration of resveratrol afforded statistically significant protection to the cochlea of guinea pigs from cisplatin toxicity. Experimental dose of resveratrol injections may have a protective effect against cisplatin ototoxicity in guinea pigs.
