Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of exercise in the cold on Ghrelin, PYY, and food intake in overweight adults.
Exercise in cold water has been shown to simulate postexercise energy intake (EI) in normal-weight individuals. However, the effect of cold exercise on EI in overweight individuals has yet to be examined. The present study investigated the effect of brisk walking in a cold (8°C) and neutral (20°C) environment on postexercise EI and appetite hormone responses. ⋯ These findings show that in overweight individuals, exercise in the cold stimulates postexercise EI to a greater extent than exercise in a neutral environment.

Lung function, nutritional status, and parameters of exercise capacity are known predictors of mortality in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of the current study was to use these important parameters to develop a multivariate model to predict mortality in adolescent patients with CF. ⋯ The currently developed model consisting of BMI, FEV1%predicted, and VE/VO2 is a strong predictor of mortality rate in adolescents with CF. This prediction equation may be useful in clinical practice to detect patients with a high risk of mortality and to provide them with additional therapy earlier.

Inflammatory genes and psychological factors predict induced shoulder pain phenotype.
The pain experience has multiple influences, but little is known about how specific biological and psychological factors interact to influence pain responses. The current study investigated the combined influences of genetic (pro-inflammatory) and psychological factors on several preclinical shoulder pain phenotypes. ⋯ These findings support the combined predictive ability of specific genetic and psychological factors for shoulder pain phenotypes by revealing novel combinations that may merit further investigation in clinical cohorts to determine their involvement in the transition from acute to chronic pain conditions.

Randomized Controlled TrialEarly rehabilitative exercise training in the recovery from pediatric burn.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of early outpatient exercise on muscle mass, function, and fractional synthetic rate in severely burned children. ⋯ Early outpatient exercise training implemented at hospital discharge represents an effective intervention to improve muscle mass and function after severe burn injury.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyResistance exercise, disability, and pain catastrophizing in obese adults with back pain.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two different resistance exercise protocols on self-reported disability, fear avoidance beliefs, pain catastrophizing, and back pain symptoms in obese, older adults with low back pain (LBP). ⋯ Greater reductions in perceived disability due to LBP can be achieved with TOTRX compared with those achieved with LEXT. Pain catastrophizing and pain severity decreased most with TOTRX. The positive change in psychological outlook may assist obese, older adults with chronic back pain in reconsidering the harmfulness of the pain and facilitate regular participation in other exercise programs.
