Ablative fractional laser treatment has been used to improve the color and texture of hypertrophic scars with safe and effective results. However, no consensus on the optimal time to initiate fractional laser treatment is available. The effect on early-stage scars remains controversial. This study was designed to assess the efficacy and safety of ablative fractional carbon dioxide (CO2 ) laser treatments for hypertrophic burn scars and to analyze the efficacy and safety in the early period within 3 months after injury. ⋯ This study demonstrated the safety and efficacy of ablative fractional CO2 laser treatment applied to early-stage burn scars. The optimal time for laser application for burn patients can be within 1 month after injury. Durometry and spectrocolorimetry were effective for assessing scars as objective modalities. Lasers Surg. Effect of Artesunate Combined With Fractional CO2 Laser on the Hypertrophic Scar in a Rabbit Model.
Hypertrophic scar (HS), a common complication in wound healing, is characterized by the disarrangement of collagen, fibers, and extracellular matrix. Artesunate (ART) can inhibit the abnormal formation of fibroblasts and collagens. Fractional CO2 laser (FCO2 L) can facilitate tissue remodeling and the absorption of drugs into ablative microthermal columns in HS. So far, no research has investigated the efficacy of ART combined with an FCO2 L in treating HS. To investigate the theoretical basis and clinical significance of this combination, we established a rabbit model of HS to observe the change in the expression of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). ⋯ The combination of ART and FCO2 L can effectively reduce HS in the rabbit model. This is the first report about this combination in the treatment of HS. A novel treatment is expected to be based on our findings. Lasers Surg. Med. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Non-specific low back pain (LBP) is responsible for triggering increased biomarkers levels. In this way, photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) may be an interesting alternative to treat these patients. One of the possible biological mechanisms of PBMT involved to decrease pain intensity in patients with musculoskeletal disorders is modulation of the inflammatory mediators' levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of PBMT compared with placebo on inflammatory mediators' levels and pain intensity in patients with chronic non-specific LBP. ⋯ Our results suggest that PBMT was able to modulate prostaglandin E2 levels, indicating that this may be one of the mechanisms involved in the analgesic effects of PBMT in patients with LBP. Keloids and hypertrophic scars are challenging to both patients and physicians. They can be aesthetically disfiguring, functionally debilitating, and emotionally distressing. Lasers have introduced new mechanisms to improve scars both on aesthetic and symptomatic levels. ⋯ small sample size and short follow-up period. Lasers Surg. Med. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Ablative fractional laser (AFL) systems are commonly used to treat various scars, and recent research has indicated that early treatment with AFL may have a preventive effect on scars. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of early treatment with a 10,600 nm carbon dioxide (CO2 ) AFL on thyroidectomy scars and compare it to late (conventional) treatment for the same and untreated controls. ⋯ Early postoperative AFL treatment is safe and effective in improving linear surgical scars, such as thyroidectomy scars, and may be a promising option for scar prevention.
