Optical coherence tomography (OCT) catheters for intraluminal imaging are subject to various artifacts due to reference-sample arm dispersion imbalances and sample arm beam astigmatism. The goal of this work was to develop a probe that minimizes such artifacts. ⋯ In this work, we developed an astigmatism-corrected, common path probe that minimizes artifacts associated with standard OCT probes. This design may be useful for OCT applications that require high axial and lateral resolutions. Lasers Surg. Med. 49:312-318, 2017. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Fractional CO2 laser treatment of caesarean section scars-A randomized controlled split-scar trial with long term follow-up assessment.
Caesarean section (c-section) scars can be pose functional and cosmetic challenges and ablative fractional laser (AFXL) treatment may offer benefit to patients. We evaluated textural and color changes over time in AFXL-treated versus untreated control scars. ⋯ Scar remodeling is initiated 1 month after AFXL treatment, but overall scar improvement is concealed until laser-induced color changes resolve. At 6 months follow-up, the benefit of AFXL treatment on c-section scars emerges. Lasers Surg. Med. 49:189-197, 2017. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Split face evaluation of long-pulsed non-ablative 1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser for treatment of direct browplasty scars.
To investigate 1,064 nm long-pulse Nd:YAG laser for postoperative treatment of direct browplasty scars. ⋯ The 1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser provided significant improvement in scar cosmesis after direct browplasty, as rated by subject self-report, but not by masked observers, and appears to be a useful tool for increasing satisfaction among those dissatisfied with direct browplasty scars. Side effects-including erythema, edema, and discomfort-were transient and universally rated as mild to moderate. Lasers Surg. Med. 48:742-747, 2016. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Photobiomodulation of the dorsal root ganglion for the treatment of low back pain: A pilot study.
Chronic low back pain is a worldwide public health issue with high socioeconomic impact. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of laser irradiation of the dorsal root ganglion of the second lumbar spinal nerve for chronic axial low back pain compared to lidocaine injection and radiofrequency treatment. ⋯ Laser irradiation caused an immediate decrease in low back pain post-procedure similar to pain reduction caused by lidocaine injection. Both lidocaine injection and laser irradiation were more effective than radiofrequency treatment for immediate and longer term (1 month post-treatment) chronic back pain. Lasers Surg. Med. 48:653-659, 2016. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

To systematically review studies of laser treatment of infantile hemangioma (IH). ⋯ Studies of laser treatment of IH primarily addressed different laser modalities compared with observation or other laser modalities. PDL was the most commonly studied laser type, but multiple variations in treatment protocols did not allow for demonstration of superiority of a single method. Most studies reported a higher success rate with longer pulse PDL compared to observation in managing the size of IH, although the magnitude of effect differed substantially. Studies generally found PDL more effective than other types of lasers for cutaneous lesions. When first introduced as a primary treatment for IH, various laser modalities generally offered superior outcomes compared with steroid therapy and observation. In the era of β-blocker therapy, laser treatment may retain an important role in the treatment of residual and refractory lesions.
