Health status and perception of pain: a comparative study between female patients with hand osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most frequent rheumatic joint disease and its occurrence is growing due to prolonged life expectancy and an increasing number of elderly individuals in the population. The main objective of this study was to compare the burden of disease, assessed by measures of pain and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), between female patients with hand osteoarthritis (HOA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). ⋯ The overall impact of the disease on HRQoL was similar between RA and HOA patients, based on the SF-6D scores. Physical function was worse in RA patients, but HOA patients reported worse scores in pain measures and FM-like symptoms.

Comparative StudyComparison of three rheumatoid arthritis disease activity scores in clinical routine.
To evaluate whether the revised disease activity cut-off values for the Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI) and the Clinical Disease Activity Index (CDAI) are in congruence with the Disease Activity Score including a 28-joint count (DAS28) disease activity criteria in daily clinical routine. ⋯ The revised SDAI limits for disease activity and the respective CDAI thresholds proved to be in congruence with the DAS28 disease activity categories in daily clinical routine. The SDAI and the CDAI were found to be more stringent in defining remission.

Comparative StudyUpregulation of 78-kDa glucose-regulated protein in macrophages in peripheral joints of active ankylosing spondylitis.
To investigate the expression of the 78-kDa glucose-regulated protein (GRP78), a marker of activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR), in macrophages of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) synovium and synovial fluid and to explore the relationship between the expression of GRP78 and synovial fluid levels of the proinflammatory cytokines, as well as the inflammatory activity of AS. ⋯ Activation of the UPR occurs in macrophages in both the synovium and synovial fluids of AS-involved peripheral joints, and there may be a link between activation of the UPR of macrophages and local production of the proinflammatory cytokines, as well as the inflammatory activity of AS.

SDAI/CDAI levels in rheumatoid arthritis patients are highly dependent on patient's pain perception and gender.
To determine whether the Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI) and the Clinical Disease Activity Index (CDAI) are equally applicable for the total population with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). ⋯ SDAI and CDAI values are highly dependent on the patient's pain perception and gender. The effects of patient's age, disease duration, and RF were inconclusive with respect to the values of the respective disease activity indexes.

High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in Kawasaki disease.
To investigate whether two proinflammatory cytokines, high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) are involved in the development of Kawasaki disease (KD). ⋯ These data suggest that HMGB1 and MIF play an important role in immune responses in KD patients.
