Induction chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy in advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
A phase II study was carried out to investigate an induction regimen with cisplatin, paclitaxel followed by radiotherapy concurrent with weekly cisplatin for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. ⋯ Our induction two-drug regimen followed by chemoradiotherapy with concurrent weekly cisplatin was well tolerated with low acute toxicity and good locoregional control and survival rate.

Multicenter StudyImpact of complementary treatment of breast cancer patients with standardized mistletoe extract during aftercare: a controlled multicenter comparative epidemiological cohort study.
To investigate the safety and efficacy of complementary treatment of breast cancer patients with the standardized mistletoe extract (sME) HELIXOR in routine practice during aftercare through a multicenter comparative epidemiological cohort study with 53 randomly selected hospitals/practices representatively distributed in Germany, including oncologists, gynaecologists and general practitioners. ⋯ Complementary treatment with the sME HELIXOR proved to be beneficial for breast cancer patients since it significantly improved quality of life and significantly reduced persistant signs/symptoms of the disease/treatment during the validated aftercare period of approximately five years.

Practice and costs of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion in an oncological unit.
Cancer related anemia impairs patient functioning. Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion and erythropoietin (EPO) may relieve fatigue. Cost-effectiveness data have been requested. ⋯ RBC-transfusion has a low cost.

Comparative StudyQuantitative assessment of gliomas by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
Advanced magnetic resonance (MR) techniques provide physiological and metabolic information that complements the anatomical information available from conventional MR imaging. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of proton MR spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in preoperative quantitative assessment of intracranial gliomas. ⋯ The combination of multiple MR parameters, based on DWI, PWI and 1H-MRS, appears valuable for preoperatively predicting the degree of malignancy in glioma.

Case ReportsPercutaneous combined therapy for painful sternal metastases: a radiofrequency thermal ablation (RFTA) and cementoplasty protocol.
Radiofrequency thermal ablation (RFTA) has recently been introduced for the treatment of painful bone metastases. We report the outcome of one combined protocol session of percutaneous RFTA and cementoplasty on a painful sternal breast cancer metastasis of a 66-year-old patient. ⋯ Combined percutaneous therapy showed feasibility and effectiveness and can be considered as an alternative for the treatment of painful bone metastases.
