Expression Profile of the Integrin Receptor Subunits in the Guinea Pig Sclera.
The ocular dimensional changes in myopia reflect increased scleral remodeling, and in high myopia, loss of scleral integrity leads to biomechanical weakening and continued scleral creep. As integrins, a type of cell surface receptors, have been linked to scleral remodeling, they represent potential targets for myopia therapies. As a first step, this study aimed to characterize the integrin subunits at the messenger RNA level in the sclera of the guinea pig, a more recently added but increasingly used animal model for myopia research. ⋯ The possible contributions of integrins to scleral remodeling make them plausible targets for myopia prevention. Data from this study will help guide future ex vivo and in vitro studies directed at understanding the relationship between scleral integrins and ocular growth regulation in the guinea pig model for myopia.

Observational StudyThiol Disulfide Homeostasis in Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome.
To determine the serum thiol disulfide homeostasis in patients with pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome. ⋯ Our findings provide evidence that the dynamic native thiol/disulfide ratio is lower in PEX syndrome, which shows a reduction in the natural cell reductive capacity reservoir.

Fluctuations of the Intraocular Pressure in One Eye Influence the Intraocular Pressure in the Fellow Eye.
To investigate the ophthalmotonic consensual reaction (OCR) in healthy individuals. ⋯ Our results showed some evidence for the existence of the OCR in healthy individuals. Significant IOP elevation in one eye resulted in IOP reduction in the fellow eye. Interestingly, this phenomenon did not exist vice versa.

This review presents and discusses the contribution of machine learning techniques for diagnosis and disease monitoring in the context of clinical vision science. Many ocular diseases leading to blindness can be halted or delayed when detected and treated at its earliest stages. With the recent developments in diagnostic devices, imaging and genomics, new sources of data for early disease detection and patients' management are now available. ⋯ For that, the representativeness of the input dataset for the true population should be confirmed, the noise should be removed, the missing data should be treated and the data dimensionally (i.e., the number of parameters/features and the number of cases in the dataset) should be adjusted. The application of machine learning techniques in ocular disease diagnosis and monitoring will be presented and discussed in the second section of this manuscript. To show the clinical benefits of machine learning in clinical vision sciences, several examples will be presented in glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, these ocular pathologies being the major causes of irreversible visual impairment.

A Novel Tool for the Assessment Oxidative Stress in Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Thiol/Disulfide Homeostasis Revisited.
To investigate thiol/disulfide status using a novel automated assay in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) compared to age-matched healthy controls. ⋯ A greater extent of thiol consumption occurred in AMD patients compared to age-matched healthy controls. However, despite the similar levels of total thiol levels between several grades of AMD, the plasma native TDR value was decreased in accordance with the severity of the disease, which reflected the disease grade better.
