Randomized Controlled Trial
A randomized, double blind pilot study to assess the effects of losartan vs. atenolol on the biophysical properties of the aorta in patients with Marfan and Loeys-Dietz syndromes.
Patients with Marfan (MFS) and Loeys-Dietz (LDS) syndromes have been shown to have abnormal aortic biophysical properties. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 12-months of therapy with atenolol or losartan on vascular function in young patients with MFS and LDS. ⋯ This pilot study suggests that atenolol and losartan may have different mechanisms of action on vascular function. A larger clinical trial is needed to confirm these effects.Clinical trials registration NCT00593710 (ClinicalTrials.gov).

A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the risk of major bleeding with the use of New Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs). ⋯ Risk of major bleeding with new oral anticoagulants varies with their indication for use. New agents may be associated with comparatively less major bleeding compared to VKA. NOAC may increase the risk of major bleeding after hip surgery, ACS and acute medically ill patients; but may be associated with less bleeding in treatment of acute VTE/PE.

Observational Study
Flow-mediated dilation is associated with cardiovascular events in non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients.
Atrial fibrillation is associated with multiple atherosclerotic risk factors and predisposes to cardiovascular events (CVE). Endothelial dysfunction is associated with atherosclerosis and independently predicts CVE. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between endothelial dysfunction, as assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD), and CVE in AF patients. ⋯ In AF patients low FMD is associated with increased risk of CVE suggesting that impaired artery dilatation predisposes to atherosclerotic complications.
