Review Meta AnalysisPerioperative Systemic Corticosteroids in Orthognathic Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Perioperative systemic corticosteroids are broadly used in orthognathic surgery to prevent postoperative complications, but it is unclear whether this practice is beneficial and concerns about potential side effects have been raised. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the effects of perioperative systemic corticosteroids on clinically important outcomes in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. ⋯ The authors observed no evidence of effect of systemic corticosteroids on the risk of reintubation and hospital length of stay in orthognathic surgery. Although facial edema decrease was observed to be improved with the intervention, adverse effects were inconsistently screened and reported. Thus, the use of systemic steroids in orthognathic surgery is not supported by strong evidence.

ReviewSurgeon's Guide to Facial Soft Tissue Filler Injections: Relevant Anatomy and Safety Considerations.
The purpose of this study is to provide a review of the relevant facial anatomy related to soft tissue filler injections. Facial fillers are used daily in our clinical practice. ⋯ Proper knowledge and understanding of the anatomic landmarks can minimize the risk of these vascular events. In addition, early recognition and treatment are necessary to prevent permanent complications.

Review Case ReportsFloor-of-Mouth Hematoma Following Dental Implant Placement: Literature Review and Case Presentation.
The authors provide a structured review of reported cases of floor-of-mouth hematoma during or after dental implantation and frequent causes and management and present a related case. ⋯ Serious complications, such as floor-of-mouth hematoma after dental implant insertion, can occur, which could be life-threatening. Preoperative 3D imaging helps to visualize the individual mandibular shape, which could decrease the incidence of serious complications. If injury to vessels of the floor of the mouth cannot be confidently excluded, then further assessment and treatment are recommended before the patient is discharged.

Randomized Controlled TrialEfficacy of Codeine When Added to Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) and Ibuprofen for Relief of Postoperative Pain After Surgical Removal of Impacted Third Molars: A Double-Blinded Randomized Control Trial.
The use of opioids in combination with nonopioids is common practice for acute pain management after third molar surgery. One such combination is paracetamol, ibuprofen, and codeine. The authors assessed the efficacy of codeine when added to a regimen of paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain relief after third molar surgery. ⋯ Codeine 60 mg added to a regimen of paracetamol 1,000 mg and ibuprofen 400 mg does not improve analgesia after third molar surgery.

Evaluation of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residents' Operative Skills: Feasibility and Engagement Study Using SIMPL Software for a Mobile Phone.
There are no universally accepted tools to evaluate operative skills of surgical residents in a timely fashion. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of using a smartphone application, SIMPL (System for Improving and Measuring Procedural Learning), developed by a multi-institutional research collaborative, to achieve a high rate of timely operative evaluations and resident communication and to collect performance data. The authors hypothesized that these goals would be achieved because the process is convenient and efficient. ⋯ SIMPL facilitates timely intraoperative evaluations of surgical skills, engagement by faculty and residents, and collection of detailed procedural data. Additional prospective trials to assess this tool further are planned.
