The aim of this study is to investigate sleep quality in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and to evaluate the relationship of the disease parameters with sleep disturbance. Eighty AS patients (60 males and 20 females) fulfilling the modified New York criteria, and 52 age- and gender-matched controls (33 males and 19 females) were enrolled in the study. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). ⋯ Pain was also an independent contributor to poorer sleep quality (p = 0.002). The sleep quality is disturbed in patients with AS. The lower quality of sleep is greatly associated with the pain, disease activity, depression, quality of life and increased limitation of mobility.

CD163, a membrane glycoprotein restricted to monocyte-macrophage cell lineage, is released in the terminal phase of acute inflammation and during chronic inflammation, with anti-inflammatory and antiangiogenic role. The proteolytically detached ectodomain of CD163 is the soluble component sCD163. A few studies were performed regarding circulating sCD163 in human diseases. ⋯ IL-12 and CXCL10 serum levels strongly correlated with sCD163 concentrations, while IL-17 positively but insignificantly correlated. In conclusion, serum sCD163 levels are significantly elevated in long-standing RA patients, but sCD163 has no role as a biomarker of disease activity. High correlation of sCD163 with IL-12 and CXCL10 suggests the association of their well-known anti-inflammatory function in long-standing RA patients.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a chronic pain syndrome characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue. The current study was designed to evaluate the awareness and skills of orthopedic surgeons (OS) regarding FMS diagnosis and treatment. For the examination of awareness and familiarity of OS in Israel to Fibromyalgia, a questionnaire-based survey was conducted. ⋯ In addition, OS who were trained in the south of Israel were found to have a better degree of knowledge about FM (9.7 vs. 7.4; p < 0.03). The awareness and knowledge among OS regarding FM needs to be improved. OS who were trained in the south of Israel were found to have better degree of knowledge regarding FM.
