Comparative Study[Can serum protein S100beta predict neurological deterioration after moderate or minor traumatic brain injury?].
Patients with moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) (Glasgow Coma Scale, GCS, 9-13) or minor TBI (GCS 14-15) are at risk for subsequent neurological deterioration. Serum protein S-100 is believed to reflect brain damage following TBI. In patients with normal or minor CT scan abnormalities on admission, we tested whether the determination of serum protein S-100 beta could predict secondary neurological deterioration. ⋯ The dosage of serum protein S-100 on admission failed to predict patients at risk for neurological deterioration after minor or moderate TBI. Extracranial injuries can increase serum protein S-100 levels, then limiting the usefulness of this dosage in this clinical setting.

We report the case of a 36-year-old man who underwent neurosurgery for a T9 spine fracture consecutive to a fall. The patient had complete postoperative blindness which did not totally recover during the hospital stay. ⋯ Such postoperative complications in spine surgery are severe. To avoid them, it is mandatory to identify the contributing factors and set up a preventive strategy.

[Feasibility of out-of-hospital management of non-heart-beating donors in Seine-Saint-Denis: one year retrospective study].
The use of non-heart-beating donors (NHBD) could help shorten the list of patients who are waiting for a kidney transplant. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficiency of prehospital management of non-heart-beating donors in Seine-Saint-Denis area. We performed a retrospective cohort study of non-heart-beating donor managed by prehospital medical team of Samu 93 from February 2007 to January 2008. ⋯ Six-month survival rate for NHBD grafts was 94%. In the same time, eight brain dead donors were managed by Samu 93 and were harvested leading to transplant 16 kidneys. Finally, 50% of overall kidney transplant activity in Seine-Saint-Denis was provided by NHBD grafts.
