Review Comparative Study[The seventh report of the confidential enquiries into maternal deaths in the United Kingdom: comparison with French data].
To describe the main results and recommendations from the seventh report on confidential enquiry into maternal death in the United Kingdom (UK) (2003-2005). ⋯ The United Kingdom report integrates modern strategies that might improve patient safety, including systems failure analysis, incident reporting and registries. Systematic auditing (with proposition of auditable standards) might also prove important in facilitating implementation of the top ten recommendations. All these strategies might also be implemented in France and hopefully might prove to be also beneficial here.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study[Duration of antibiotic therapy for ventilator-associated pneumonia: comparison of 7 and 10 days. A pilot study].
To compare the efficiency of a 7-day antibiotics regimen with a 10-day regimen for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). ⋯ In patients with microbiologically confirmed VAP who received appropriate empirical antibiotic therapy, a 7-day antibiotic regimen was as efficient clinically and microbiologically as a 10-day antibiotic regimen with a reduction of antibiotic use.

Review[Peripartum cardiomyopathy: incidence, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis].
Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare and life-threatening disease of unknown aetiology. The primary objective of this review was to analysed aetiopathogeneses, clinical presentation and diagnosis, as well as pharmacological, perioperative and intensive care management and prognosis of this pathology. ⋯ PPCM is a rare but serious form of cardiac failure affecting women in the last months of pregnancy or early puerperium. Its aetiopathogenesis is still poorly understood. Introduction of echocardiography has made diagnosis of PPCM easier and more accurate. Prognosis is highly related to reversal of ventricular dysfunction.

Mastocytosis are characterized by an accumulation of abnormal mast cells in various tissues. Their incidence is estimated at 1/150,000 patients. Pure cutaneous mastocytosis which are mainly observed during childhood may resolve spontaneously during adolescence, whereas systemic mastocytosis involving one or more organs or tissues are more observed in adults. ⋯ The cardiovascular symptoms do not correlate to the cutaneous versus systemic description of the disease. The drug of choice for the treatment of the severe cardiovascular signs is epinephrine associated to vascular loading. The aim of this literature review is to suggest the different modalities of perioperative care of patients with mastocytosis.
