ReviewFrailty syndrome and pre-operative risk evaluation: A systematic review.
Frailty is a geriatric syndrome characterized by the clinical presentation of identifiable physical alterations and decreased physiological reserve. The assessment of frailty syndrome has been recently related with post-surgical outcomes and overall mortality in older individuals. ⋯ Assessment of frailty syndrome should be added in the pre-operative risk assessment in older individuals.

Multicenter StudyMajor adverse cardiac events in elderly patients with coronary artery disease undergoing noncardiac surgery: A multicenter prospective study in China.
Major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) are important causes of perioperative morbidity and mortality for elderly patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Treatment and control rates for coronary artery disease (CAD) in Chinese patients are poorer than rates in western countries. However, no previous prospective study has focused on perioperative MACE in this population. Our aim was to ascertain the incidence and risk factors associated with MACEs in Chinese patients. ⋯ The incidence of MACE in Chinese elderly patients with CAD who underwent non-cardiac surgery was 9.1%. Seven independent risk factors for a perioperative MACE were identified. Preventing intraoperative hypoxemia and hypotension may reduce the occurrence of MACE in these high risk patients.

Older adults are a vulnerable road user group with high mortality and morbidity in road crash. The aim of this study was to show pattern of road traffic injuries in this special aging group. ⋯ High mortality rate of road traffic injuries in this group especially in pedestrians should be taken into consideration and strategies aimed at the road-user safety including periodic medical examination and improvement of road structure and facilities.

Six screening instruments for frailty in older patients qualified for emergency abdominal surgery.
The literature on geriatric assessment in emergency admitted patients is scarce, particularly there are no studies regarding the efficacy of frailty screening tests among patients qualified for emergency abdominal surgery. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of six screening instruments in this group of patients. ⋯ Considering these results, it is possible to perform safely and efficiently screening test for frailty in older patients qualified for emergency abdominal surgery. The VES-13 was the best screening instrument; it had the highest sensitivity and negative predictive value both for the postoperative mortality and morbidity. This instrument may offer physicians additional information that can be used in the postoperative optimisation of the treatment of these high-risk group of patients.

Validation of Katz index of independence in activities of daily living in Turkish older adults.
Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living Scale (Katz ADL) is a widely used tool to assess the level of independency in older adults. The objective of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the six item Katz ADL in geriatric patients aged 65 years and older. ⋯ Validating an instrument, which has originally been developed in a different culture, is a complex but neccessary task. It provides an opportunity for comparison of information across different cultures. To our knowledge, this is the only study to demonstrate reliability and validity of the Katz ADL-six item version in the geriatric population living in Turkey. Turkish version of the Katz ADL is a valid and reliable scale to detect the disability status in the basic activities of daily living in older adults.
