Six screening instruments for frailty in older patients qualified for emergency abdominal surgery.
The literature on geriatric assessment in emergency admitted patients is scarce, particularly there are no studies regarding the efficacy of frailty screening tests among patients qualified for emergency abdominal surgery. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of six screening instruments in this group of patients. ⋯ Considering these results, it is possible to perform safely and efficiently screening test for frailty in older patients qualified for emergency abdominal surgery. The VES-13 was the best screening instrument; it had the highest sensitivity and negative predictive value both for the postoperative mortality and morbidity. This instrument may offer physicians additional information that can be used in the postoperative optimisation of the treatment of these high-risk group of patients.

Validation of Katz index of independence in activities of daily living in Turkish older adults.
Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living Scale (Katz ADL) is a widely used tool to assess the level of independency in older adults. The objective of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the six item Katz ADL in geriatric patients aged 65 years and older. ⋯ Validating an instrument, which has originally been developed in a different culture, is a complex but neccessary task. It provides an opportunity for comparison of information across different cultures. To our knowledge, this is the only study to demonstrate reliability and validity of the Katz ADL-six item version in the geriatric population living in Turkey. Turkish version of the Katz ADL is a valid and reliable scale to detect the disability status in the basic activities of daily living in older adults.

Clinical phenotype of drug-naïve Parkinson's disease based on nonmotor symptoms.
Nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) are heterogeneous and can result in a variety of symptoms at various disease stages. The objective of the present study was to identify clinically meaningful nonmotor symptoms and to assess the relationship between changes in nonmotor symptoms and cognition and motor symptoms. ⋯ This study shows that motor impairment and depressed mood in PD are related to sleep/fatigue, attention/memory and mood/cognition. Sleep/fatigue, attention/memory and mood/cognition also had a major impact on health-related quality of life. It is appropriate to identify patients with severe motor symptoms and depressed mood in order to signify the need to consider more detailed care and further assessment.

Pre- and perioperative predictors of changes in mobility and living arrangements after hip fracture--a population-based study.
Examining pre- and perioperative predictors of changes in mobility and living arrangements after hip fracture. ⋯ Worsening of mobility was significant for independent mobilizers. Prefracture impaired mobility was associated with the need of more supported living arrangements. Living in an assisted living accommodation protected against institutionalization. The findings emphasize the importance of a prompt removal of the urinary catheter after hip fracture.
