To explore the short-term effects from toothbrushing, tongue cleaning with sponge brush and wiping on oral mucous membrane by chlorhexidine. ⋯ It was suggested that the use of not only a toothbrush but also chlorhexidine gluconate may be indicated for dependent elderly people in whom pathogens of opportunistic infection are detected.

Multicenter Study
The impact of integration of dental services on oral health in long-term care: qualitative analysis.
To qualitatively analyse how integration of dental service in long-term care (LTC) impacts residents and their oral health. ⋯ Two of the three LTC centres identified in this study failed to provide appropriate oral care for their residents. Future research needs to be directed at prospective studies assessing the effect of oral health education and mandatory dental examinations o entry within LTC centres utilising qualitative and quantitative analyses.

To discuss the preparedness of the social and health care systems and the health workforce in Europe to manage the increasing general and oral health care needs of older adults. ⋯ Immediate action is needed and appropriate strategies need to be implemented. Oral health prevention, delivery policies and funding should be integrated within the general health care system. Clinical protocols and guidelines need to be developed on the oral care of the elderly. Interdisciplinary training in the care of the elderly needs to be implemented for all health care workers (dentists, physicians, nurses, health care aids, social workers) at all education levels to enhance comprehensive care.

Study of temporomandibular joint disorder in older patients by magnetic resonance imaging.
To compare characteristics in older patients in a sample of the general population of those with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD). ⋯ In this study, it was found that 22% were older patients with TMJD. A higher level of anxiety was shown in both patients' groups, regardless of shorter pain experience in the older patients.
