Comparative Study Controlled Clinical Trial
Ultrasound assessment of inferior vena cava collapsibility is not a valid measure of preload changes during triggered positive pressure ventilation: a controlled cross-over study.
Respiratory changes in the diameter of the inferior vena cava (IVC) have been validated as a measure of volume status and preload responsiveness during spontaneous breathing and mechanical ventilation. However, many intensive care patients are ventilated with triggered positive pressure ventilation (PPV). In this setting, there is no evidence regarding IVC collapsibility (IVCc) as a surrogate for preload. We aimed to elucidate the effects of increasing levels of triggered PPV and of varying preload conditions on the IVCc. ⋯ The compiled results of this study show that IVCc cannot be held as a valid measure of preload status during PPV. This may be explained by systematic alterations in other determinants for IVCc. Comparison of methods encourages the use of sagittal 2-dimensional echocardiography for dynamic imaging of the IVC. Sagittal M-mode and transverse 2-dimensional echocardiography overestimate IVCc as compared to sagittal 2-dimensional echocardiography.

Patients with blunt abdominal trauma are initially imaged with ultrasound (US) for the evaluation of free abdominal fluid. However, lacerations of solid organs can be overlooked. Although computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard technique for abdominal trauma imaging, overutilization, ionizing radiation, need to transport the patient and potential artifacts are well known disadvantages. ⋯ It can be rapidly performed at the patient's bedside with no need for transportation. There are only very few contraindications and anaphylactoid reactions are extremely rare. Altogether, CEUS has proved to be very helpful for the initial imaging of traumatic lesions of the liver, kidney and spleen, as well as for patient follow-up.

The purpose of this study was to compare the prenatal detection of four congenital heart defects (CHDs) and the image quality of five corresponding ultrasound planes among obese, overweight and normal-weight women. ⋯ The prenatal detection of fetal AVSD, DORV, TOF and D-TGA was also satisfactory in overweight and obese patients, but image quality substantially decreases with an increasing maternal BMI. If there is a BMI-associated difference in the detection rate, it probably will not exceed 20%.

Brain tumor imaging with transcranial sonography: state of the art and review of the literature.
Transcranial sonography (TCS) is a widely used non-invasive bedside method to evaluate the brain, its vessels, perfusion and pathologies. Transcranial brain tumor sonography emerged in the early nineties and while B-mode imaging and Color-Doppler have acquired widespread use, especially for intraoperative imaging, other ultrasound modalities such as Perfusion Imaging are applied more in the research field. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the different ultrasound modalities and their respective application in sonographic brain tumor imaging.

High resolution ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging of the optic nerve and the optic nerve sheath: anatomic correlation and clinical importance.
We performed a cadaver study to evaluate the accuracy of measurements of the optic nerve and the optic nerve sheath for high resolution US (HRUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). ⋯ If decisive anatomic structures are clearly depicted and the measuring points are set correctly, there is a good correlation between HRUS and MRI measurements of the optic nerve and the ONSD even on transbulbar sonography. As most of the standard and cut-off values that have been published for ultrasound are significantly lower than the results obtained with MRI, a reevaluation of sonographic ONSD measurement with correlation to MRI is necessary.
