Comparative StudyA cross-national comparative study of blood pressure levels and hypertension prevalence in Canada and Hungary.
Hungary has one of the highest cardiovascular (CV) mortality and stroke rates compared to other countries in Europe and North America. Data from two recent blood pressure (BP) screening projects in Hungary and Canada provided us with the opportunity to compare potential differences in the prevalence of hypertension between these countries. ⋯ The increased prevalence of hypertension among young and middle-aged Hungarians compared with Canadians could represent an essential contributor to the high CV mortality and stroke rates in Hungary. BP awareness, treatment and control require improved medical attention and should be addressed early among young Hungarians.

Comparative StudyDoes home blood pressure allow for a better assessment of the white-coat effect than ambulatory blood pressure?
The difference between clinic and ambulatory blood pressure (BP) is a poor estimate of the true white-coat effect (WCE) measured with beat-to-beat recording. ⋯ As previously observed for ambulatory WCE, home WCE does not reflect the true BP reaction to doctor's visit. BP response to psychosocial stressors is increased in individuals with hyperreactivity to doctor's measurement but not in individuals with white-coat hypertension identified with either ambulatory or HBP measurement.

Changes in circulating concentrations of soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 and placental growth factor measured by automated electrochemiluminescence immunoassays methods are predictors of preeclampsia.
Preeclampsia is characterized by an imbalance in angiogenic factors such as soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) and placental growth factor (PlGF). We herein assessed whether these factors measured by a newly developed automated electrochemiluminescence immunoassay are associated with risk to develop preeclampsia. ⋯ Changes in circulating concentrations of PlGF, sFlt-1, and in the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio precede the onset of preeclampsia. The risk profile of circulating angiogenic factors for developing preeclampsia distinctly evolves depending on whether this condition is manifested at preterm or term.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor/angiotensin II receptor blockers and pneumonia risk among stroke patients.
To investigate the effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers on pneumonia hospitalization in patients with stroke history in Taiwan. ⋯ Our study revealed a significant protective effect with dose-response relationship of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor use on hospitalization for pneumonia among stroke patients. Further studies to confirm the protective effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor use on pneumonia risk are warranted.

Association between hypertension and musculoskeletal complaints: a population-based study.
To investigate the association between hypertension and musculoskeletal complaints among men and women selected by a population-based sample. ⋯ Chronic musculoskeletal complaints are more frequent in men with uncontrolled hypertension under drug treatment. The absence of association in women and in hypertensive men not taking BP drugs suggest that hypertension is not a risk or protection against musculoskeletal complaints.
