Somatic disproportion predicts risk of high blood pressure among adolescent girls in India.
To examine the importance of somatic disproportion rather than absolute values of leg height and trunk height for predicting risk of high blood pressure among adolescents. ⋯ Our findings showed that rather than absolute leg or trunk length, somatic disproportion may be a relevant biomarker associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, especially in an adolescent population.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyAngiotensin-converting enzyme gene polymorphism predicts the time-course of blood pressure response to angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition in the AASK trial.
It has yet to be determined whether genotyping at the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) locus is predictive of blood pressure response to an ACE inhibitor. ⋯ African-Americans with a homozygous genotype at G12269A or homozygous ACE haplotypes responded to ramipril significantly faster than those with a heterozygous genotype or heterozygous haplotypes, suggesting that heterosis may be an important determinant of responsiveness to an ACE inhibitor. These associations may be a result of biological activity of this polymorphism, or of linkage disequilibrium with nearby variants such as the ACE Ins/Del, perhaps in the regulation of ACE splicing.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudySalt substitution: a low-cost strategy for blood pressure control among rural Chinese. A randomized, controlled trial.
Dietary sodium and potassium consumption is associated with blood pressure levels. The objective of this study was to define a practical and low-cost method for the control of blood pressure by modification of these dietary cations in rural Chinese. ⋯ Salt substitution produced a substantial and sustained systolic blood pressure reduction in this population, and should be actively promoted as a low-cost alternate or adjunct to drug therapy for people consuming significant quantities of salt.

Multicenter StudyCYBA C242T gene polymorphism and flow-mediated vasodilation in a population of young adults: the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study.
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase is a major source of the superoxide anion that contributes to decreased nitric oxide bioavailability in the vasculature. The C242T polymorphism of the CYBA gene that encodes p22phox, a component of NADPH oxidase, has been found to modulate superoxide production. We examined the relationship of the C242T polymorphism with endothelial-dependent brachial artery flow-mediated vasodilatation (FMD) in a population-based sample of young healthy adults. ⋯ The C242T polymorphism of the CYBA gene seems to be related to endothelial function in a population-based sample of young healthy adults. Overweight and smoking status may modify this genetic effect.

Arterial stiffness, cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity and postural blood pressure changes in older adults: the Rotterdam Study.
Arterial stiffness may be involved in the impairment of the arterial baroreflex. In the present study the associations between arterial stiffness and cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and between BRS and postural blood pressure (BP) changes were investigated within the framework of the Rotterdam Study. ⋯ In a large population of older subjects, arterial stiffness appears to be an independent determinant of impaired BRS. Within the same population, impaired BRS was associated with orthostatic BP changes.
