Multicenter Study Observational StudyPediatric supratentorial high-grade glioma: multicenter retrospective observational study of the Korean Society for Pediatric Neuro-Oncology.
We analyzed the prognostic factors of Korean pediatric patients with supratentorial high-grade glioma (HGG). Between 1997 and 2011, 62 patients with 34 glioblastomas and 28 anaplastic gliomas were surgically operated at nine institutions. The male-to-female ratio was 33 to 29 and the median age was 12 years (range 1-18). ⋯ CSF dissemination was observed in 22 patients (35.5 %) during total follow-up. Pediatric anaplastic glioma showed poor survival, similarly to glioblastoma. GTR and initial combined chemoradiotherapy were associated with improved survival.

ReviewChemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathies in hematological malignancies.
Recent developments in the treatment of hematological malignancies, especially with the advent of proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory drugs in plasma cell dyscrasias, call for an increased collaboration between hematologists and neurologists. This collaboration involves differentiating chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathies (CiPN) from disease-related neurologic complications, early recognition of CiPN and treatment of neuropathic pain. Multiple myeloma, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia and light-chain amyloidosis frequently present with peripheral neuropathy. ⋯ Early recognition, by identifying the distinct clinical phenotype of CiPN, is of crucial importance to prevent irreversible neurological damage. No recommendations can be given on the use of neuroprotective strategies because of a lack of convincing clinical evidence. Finally, CiPN caused by vinca-alkaloids, proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory drugs is often painful and neurologists are best equipped to treat this kind of painful neuropathy.

The relative value of postoperative versus preoperative Karnofsky Performance Scale scores as a predictor of survival after surgical resection of glioblastoma multiforme.
The Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) score is a widespread metric to stratify patient prognosis and determine appropriate management in glioblastoma multiforme(GBM). Low preoperative KPS values have been associated with shorter overall survival (OS). However, surgical resection can have a dramatic effect on a patient's functional status which subsequently alters their KPS score. ⋯ Higher postoperative KPS (P = 0.0001), radiation therapy (P < 0.0001), younger age (P = 0.0443) and the absence of diabetes (P = 0.0006) were each independently associated with increased OS in a multivariate regression model. Postoperative KPS score has superior predictive value compared to pre-operative KPS score (A = 0.758 vs. 1.002). Postoperative KPS scores have superior predictive capabilities in terms of OS in GBM and should replace preoperative KPS scores when estimating prognosis in this population.

Pediatric choroid plexus tumors: epidemiology, treatments, and outcome analysis on 202 children from the SEER database.
Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) and carcinomas (CPCs) are rare neoplasms that affect mostly children. Due to their rarity, their epidemiology and outcomes are incompletely understood. The National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program is a well-established population-based group of registries that collects and publishes cancer incidence and survival data representing approximately 28 % of the US population. ⋯ CPC occurs in younger children, with a male predominance, and a much worse prognosis than CPP. As such, these tumors have been treated aggressively with high rates of GTR and radiation treatment. Despite these treatments, overall survival for CPC remains poor.

Single agent efficacy of the VEGFR kinase inhibitor axitinib in preclinical models of glioblastoma.
Anti-angiogenic therapy is a promising therapeutic strategy for the highly vascular and malignant brain tumor, glioblastoma (GBM), although current clinical trials have failed to demonstrate an extension in overall survival. The small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor axitinib that targets vascular endothelial growth factor receptor, potently inhibits angiogenesis and has single-agent clinical activity in non-small cell lung, thyroid, and advanced renal cell cancer. ⋯ We thus show for the first time the anti-angiogenic effect and survival prolongation provided by systemic single agent treatment with axitinib in preclinical orthotopic GBM models including clinically relevant GSC models. These results support further investigation of axitinib as an anti-angiogenic agent for GBM.
