Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome is a rare condition characterized by a triad of orofacial edema, facial paralysis, and fissured tongue. Histopathological examination of the disease has demonstrated areas of inflammation involving mast cells. Activated mast cells also play a part in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 infection, as they release cytokines in the lungs. ⋯ We present a case of a female patient presenting with edema. Her examination revealed edema in the right lower lip, right facial paralysis, and fissured tongue. COVID-19 may be associated with which was not previously included in the etiology of the disease.

Background Violence is an increasingly common and significant problem for youth worldwide. Youth who rely on treatment at urban EDs are more likely to die as the result of violence than any other disease/condition for which they seek care. The first step in helping youth that are at risk, is identifying them. ⋯ Children who were male, non-white, and had been hurt at home or school reported the highest VPET scores. Conclusion VPET has sufficiently strong psychometric function and performs well as a screening tool to predict future violence exposure for youth ages 8-17. Five questions on the VPET screening tool are independently predictive of violence reported at 6 months and four questions at 3 months.

This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) and assess the predictive effect of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on acute SAP. ⋯ The risk factors for SAP were multifaceted. Cerebral hemorrhage, indwelling nasogastric tube, and high NLR were independent risk factors. An early NLR had a predictive effect on the occurrence of SAP in patients with acute stroke.

Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a rare, but potentially fatal condition frequently seen in the emergency department. Bronchoscopy plays a major role in its diagnosis and treatment. In patients with laryngectomy, the strategies for airway maintenance and foreign body retrieval are limited. ⋯ TEP migration is rare, but represents a risk for FBA. Initial imaging in the emergency department can be misleading, requiring a high degree of suspicion, as the TEP device may not be seen in standard chest radiography. Flexible bronchoscopy under moderate sedation in conjunction with forceps and retrieval basket may be appropriate for treatment of FBA in patients with laryngectomy and can be performed in the emergency department, preventing hospital admission.
