Physicians' patient-centred communication is assumed to stimulate patients' active participation, thus leading to more effective and humane exchange in the medical consultation. We investigated the relationship between physicians' patient-centred communication and patient participation in a medical specialist setting. ⋯ The results may give directions for future medical education and specialist training.

The effect of telephone versus print tailoring for mammography adherence.
The purpose of this intervention was to increase mammography adherence in women who had not had a mammogram in the last 15 months. ⋯ Women who are in pre contemplation stage may need a more intensive intervention.

To assess the feasibility, internal reliability, and validity, of an assessment tool, purpose-based information assessment (PIA), that we had developed to evaluate how effectively information provided to patients addresses their individual purposes for the information. The study also demonstrated potential novel insight gained by the PIA assessment. ⋯ Developers of information source or educational tools for patients can use an individualized purpose-based assessment, such as the PIA, to identify strengths and limitations of the tools more precisely than global assessments.

To examine the effect of child, physician and parent genders as well as visit length on participation. ⋯ Because gender-based patterns of participation are evident in childhood, interventions to facilitate participation might begin early in life. To improve participation, interventions might include advocating for policies to support longer visit lengths.

To gain insight into the experiences of a palliative care patient and her husband who were living on borrowed time. ⋯ Our findings can be used to support professionals in the practical application of care when their patients need to integrate the 'new reality' and seek new equilibrium, e.g. converted into a conversational guide, or used for educational purposes.
