Dosimetric experience with accelerated partial breast irradiation using image-guided interstitial brachytherapy.
To present our dosimetric findings with image-guided high-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy of breast cancer. ⋯ Dosimetric results using our implant technique based on two sets of CT scanning seem to be acceptable with respect to target coverage, dose homogeneity and conformality.

Clinical experience with the MammoSite radiation therapy system for brachytherapy of breast cancer: results from an international phase II trial.
In a prospective multi-center phase II trial, we investigated the MammoSite Radiation Therapy System, a new device for delivering intracavitary brachytherapy following breast conserving surgery. The MammoSite is a dual lumen, closed ended catheter with a small, spherical inflatable balloon and a port for connecting a remote afterloader to the central lumen. We analyzed the surgical procedure and placement of the MammoSite, treatment planning and radiation delivery complications and cosmesis, as well the comfort for the patients. ⋯ The MammoSite Radiation Therapy System is a feasible treatment modality for intracavitary brachytherapy of breast cancer after breast conserving surgery. The advantage of the system is only one applicator is necessary for the delivery of a fractionated radiotherapy. In addition, patient tolerance of the procedure is high. Critical issues concern possible overdosages at the skin reflected by a high rate of late skin damage after only 20 months of follow-up time. The method could serve as an alternative to conventional multi-catheter brachytherapy for a selected group of patients.

A phase II study of concomitant boost radiation plus concurrent weekly cisplatin for locally advanced unresectable head and neck carcinomas.
This phase II study evaluated the efficacy and toxicity of weekly cisplatin along with concomitant boost accelerated radiation regimen in patients with locally advanced unresectable head and neck carcinoma. ⋯ Concomitant boost accelerated radiation plus concurrent weekly cisplatin is a feasible schedule in patients with locally advanced unresectable head and neck carcinoma, with acceptable toxicity and survival data.

To define the dose-response relationship of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) above the conventional tumoricidal dose level of 66 Gy when the basic radiotherapy (RT) course was given by the 2D Ho's technique. ⋯ Within the context of a multi-center retrospective study, dose-escalation above 66 Gy significantly improved local control for T1/T2a and T3/4 tumors when the primary RT course was based on the 2D Ho's technique without additional chemotherapy. 'Boosting' in NPC warrants further investigation. Caution should be taken when boosting is considered because of possible increase in radiation toxicity.

Intercomparison of treatment concepts for MR image assisted brachytherapy of cervical carcinoma based on GYN GEC-ESTRO recommendations.
To perform a multicentre intercomparison study of treatment concepts for MRI assisted brachytherapy of cervix cancer based on recommendations of the Gynaecological GEC-ESTRO Working Group. ⋯ This study indicates the feasibility of the GEC-ESTRO recommendations. Despite different treatment concepts, biologically normalised total doses to tumour, target volumes and organs at risk were comparable.
